Gragas Build

Table of Contents

  • Abilities

    Happy Hour
Incredible passive. This allows a smooth transition between early lane harassing and minion farming.

    Barrel Roll
The bread n butter, meat n potatoes, steak n onion! Max it, practice it, anticipate movement, master it.

    Drunken Rage
A life saver. Great ability, restores mana, health, damage reduction, damage increase, and no cost.

    Body Slam
A great setup, and a great finisher. Also an incredible escape tool with it's small cooldown.

    Explosive Cask
Very nice ability. Decent damage, low cooldown, good CC.

  • Introduction

This guide is to give you a look into my AP Gragas build. Early game you will be powerful, mid game you will be as well. Late game you will provide good pre-"teamfight" damage, through the strategies that I will explain.

If you have any comments feel free to post, or constructive criticism.

If you've tried my guide, please feel free to let me know how it went. And if there is anything you did differently that helped.

    Thank you for reading. :D

  • Masteries + Runes

The masteries I use, which I think are pretty standard for AP dps.

    The runes I use are:

    Greater Mark of Insight x9
    Greater Seal of Clarity x9
    Greater Glyph of Celerity x9
    Greater Quintessence of Fortitude x3

  • Items

Itemization is such a huge factor early game. This is what I choose to start with. It does me pretty well.

    Doran's Ring
The ring granting a well rounded boost to vital stats, hps, AP, MP5 is excellent for early laning phases.

I don't head back until I have 1100 gold in which the next item to grab is Sorcerer's Shoes
You should have your boots by 4th or 5th level with little last hitting. Or even earlier if you gnab some early kills.

Next are the items in the order that I get them.

    Abyssal Scepter
    Lich Bane
    Void Staff
    Rabadon's Deathcap

That's your 6 items if the game hasn't finished by now, replace your Doran's Ring with [item=Rylai's Scepter] or Archangel's Staff Or if you need more survivability go for Zhonya's Hourglass

You should be packing about 700-800 damage per Q. Which is a nice chunk of hps to start team fights with, at the endgame. And your ult will be hitting for over 1k.

  • Skilling Order

Max out your Barrel Roll asap. Grab Drunken Rage at lvl 2 and continue to harass or last hit with your barrels.

A few tips on when to use what:

If your trying to line up a good Explosive Cask, don't be afraid to dash in with Body Slam, even if you can't hit the target. The boost of speed will allow you to get that Ult right were you want it. And it has a short enough cool down to be able to hit your target with it again by the time they try to run away.

Also, if they are already within range, here is an impressive combo to show off with. Toss a Barrel Roll in front of you but don't detonate it, and soon as you can Explosive Cask them into it. And of course you will have Body Slam waiting for them when they try to run.

  • Summoner Abilities

I use the ones that I spec into on the masteries.

Great escape tool, and a great chase tool.
Gragas isn't awesome on mana, this will help out a lot. Especially if you can't get ahold of the golem buff.

    Other good ones:

Not too bad, but your abilities are going to be able to land kills good enough.
Also an ok choice, another escape tool for late game, early game this will be almost useless.
Decent, but again an escape tool and I believe ghost is better, since Body Slam can get you through walls just fine, and often enough.

  • Working in the team

In the early laning phase harass as much as you can from the bushes. Go ahead and let your laning partner get the last hit on creeps. Soon you'll be able to kill a whole wave with 1 barrel. This will benefit the team in a sense of letting someone focus on getting money first. Since it will be easy later for you.

In the Mid Pushing phase, always toss your barrels up there and get some hits in before a team fight initiates. Remember your AP dps, you have decent survivability against 1 maybe 2 opponents. But in a team fight you can be eliminated quickly. Abuse your Barrel Roll as often as possible. Save your Explosive Cask for the team fight and scatter the crowd to make it easier to focus down 1 or 2 enemies. Or use it as an escape tool for a team mate. If you have Clarity don't be shy on using it.

You're a great ambusher as well. Body slam to get in there fast, and toss a barrel. Do this often and mix up the lanes when you can. Use the walls and bushes to conceal you when you toss them, it cuts their reaction time down by a lot.

  • Pros / Cons

    ~Great early game harasser
~Good at escaping through the jungles
    ~Awesome AOE damage
~Good at busting down turrets after some items
    ~Can disrupt channeling Ults

    ~Can't tower dive that well
    ~Low mana pool
~Got to get used to the Q ability
~If you miss with a barrel it really hurts your dps
~Late game you may get focused down a lot
