    Udyr
I'm back with an update after a long time. In the meantime, I've moved over to the EU West server, where I'm currently at 1903 ELO. The difference between NA and EU is really big, I can't play at all on the NA now.Udyr is still viable, both as Tiger Udyr and Phoenix Udyr. And jungle and top. He's really strong for both roles. For jungle, I always play as Phoenix. It lets you do more damage as a tank than Tiger would. Reason behind this, is that Phoenix is AOE, AS gives makes Phoenix hits more often (Wits end core), and the base dmg is higher. As tiger, you burst more, and therefore you also need more "pure" damage items, such as trinity. For solo top Udyr, it's more situational. While Phoenix gives you an easier time pushing and let's you go tanky with decent damage, Tiger gives you more burst, which is better against particular champs with lower sustain.
This guide won't be as detailed as it used to be, because I believe everyone that reads this guide have tried the game before and understand what his skillset does etc. Use personal preferences, but feel free to mix it up with stuff from this guide. Funfact
Did you know that Udyr means Beast on norwegian?

  • Abilities

    Monkey's Agility
Monkey's Agility - Entering a stance grants Udyr 10% attack speed and 1 sec cooldown on everything. This effect can stack.
    -------------

    Explanation
Dodge removed and no longer that useful as before, but meh. 30% extra AS each time you change stance. Basically, just change stance as often as possible if you want more AS.

    Tiger Stance
Activation: On his next attack, Udyr swipes at his target, dealing normal attack and dealing 150% of his attack damage + 30 / 80 / 130 / 180 / 230 extra damage over 2 seconds as magic damage. In addition, It increases attack speed 5% less than passive for 5 seconds.

Persistent Effect: Udyr's attack speed is increased by 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40%. Half of this is persistent, the other half is activated for 5 seconds.

    -------------
    Explanation
Does a shitton of damage if you stack AD, and also procs with sheen. For Tiger Udyr, this is obviously your main ability to deal damage, just switch between Tiger/Turtle and Tiger/Bear for passive stacks.

    Turtle Stance
    Activation: Udyr gains a temporary shield that absorbs 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+50% of ability power) damage.

Persistent Effect: Udyr's attacks cannot crit, but he restores 10/12/14/16/18% of his damage as health and 5/6/7/8/9% of his damage as mana.

    -------------
    Explanation
For laning, this ability is essential. Early levels in lane, you really have to be careful with your mana, and use Turtle to keep your mana up. Don't farm with anything else if you don't want to push, since this stance gives you free mana. For jungling, it makes you a really safe jungler. The shield is also really strong throughout the game.

    Bear Stance
    Activation: Udyr gains 15 / 18 / 21 / 24 / 27% increased movement speed for 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 / 4 seconds.

Persistent Effect: Udyr mauls his target with such force that they are stunned for 1 second. This effect cannot occur on the same target for 6 seconds.

    -------------
    Explanation
Selfexplained, just run around and stun people. Really strong for ganking, as it gives you movementspeedboost and a pretty long stun.

    Phoenix Stance
[color=#ABABABActivation: Udyr sends out pulsing waves of fire dealing 15/25/35/45/55 (+25% of ability power) magic damage each second to nearby enemies for 5 seconds. In addition, Udyr's ability power is increased by 16 / 24 / 32 / 40 / 48 and his attack damage is increased by half of that amount.

Persistent Effect: Every third attack, Udyr engulfs enemies in front of him in flame, dealing 40 / 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 (+25% of ability power) magic damage.[/color]
    -------------
    Explanation
Let's you push waves/clear creeps really fast both in lane and jungle. As soon as you get Wit's End, you'll be tanky and do a lot of damage.

  • Masteries + Runes + Summoner Spells Explanation

    Solo Top TigerRunes
    OR
Flat AD Marks and Quints provides a lot AD early, and gives your Tiger a lot more damage. This let's you trade better against your opponents top. As Tiger does magic damage, armor pen is not needed. Attack Damage boosts your Tiger alot, and imo there are no other options. Armor seals negates some of the minions and your opponents damage, and MR negates magic damage (obviously). If the enemy jungler is AP, or your top lane opponent got some magic damage I recommend taking flat MR, to negate as much damage as possible early, when you are less tanky.---------
    Masteries
    http://leaguecraft.com/masteries/1300420010303030101304001000000000000000000000000" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">21/9/0

You want damage, and therefore you go 21 in offense. The reason for not taking crit over the cooldown is because you have 2 points left, and I think the CD is more important than a RNG. The lifesteal helps you trade better in skirmishes, and gives you better sustain. 9 in defense is pretty self-explained, gives you better earlygame. You could go 9 in utility too for the movementspeed if you want though.
    Summoner Spells
/Exhaust and Ignite are both really strong offensive spells. What you take is up to you, but for low-sustain champs, exhaust is best. Trynd/WW/... can be a bitch if you don't take Ignite, but Exhaust is an OK option too, pretty much up to yourself. Flash is the #1 defense summoner spell for champs without any real gap closers.

    Ability Priority
[spell_icon=Bear Stance/Early, Turtle helps you a lot more than Tiger. Gvies you more sustain (mana too), and let's you skirmish more often without screwing yourself in lane). Turtle is pretty much an anti-harrass tool (GP Q, you W = 0% damage traded).

    Solo Top + Jungle PhoenixRunes
OR   (If both top and jungler is pure AD, for flat MR, if jungle or top is AP go flat MR) Attackspeed let's your Phoenix proc more often, armor and magic resist already explained above, and movementspeed is really good on Phoenix Udyr, as you want to run around dealing as much damage as possible and stun everyone.
    Masteries

    Summoner Spells

You want to push hard, so max your damage ability.

  • Jungle and Top

    Jungling
There is very little reason that one would take tiger over pheonix in the jungle; the new jungle strongly favours AoE junglers, because of the need to clear the many smaller creeps fast. Tiger simply doesn't provide any AoE. Though it gives extra AS and a spike every 4-6 seconds, the overrall damage that pheonix stance has is higher when fighting camps of 2-4 neutral monsters, considering the fact that pheonix has 2 AoE effects. Because of the AoE spike every 3rd attack, pheonix will grant much higher sustained damage, bearing in mind that in the jungle you are auto-attacking constantly. The only upside to taking tiger stance in the jungle is that the ganks will give more burst, meaning you need only strike them once in early game to bring them low, or even kill them, with the help of allies. Whereas with pheonix, ganks require more chasing down and thus gives the victim more opportunity to plan their escape.
Conclusively in most circumstances I would take pheonix in the jungle as Udyr, simply for it's increased usefulness into the late-game, and always having the option of mass farming the jungle if ganks aren't going too successfully.Phoenix also provides more tankiness and utility while dealing decent amount of damage.
Top laneThere are 2 ways a top lane can go with Udyr, you can harrass them out of lane or into death, or it can be a farm-fest, with both laners being impenetrable fortresses. For solo-top Udyr, pheonix and tiger both have their advantages, and it isn't as cut-and-dry as in the jungle, so here it is.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6PJTNFt4C8

    Tiger
Take tiger if your laning opponent has little or no sustain and is susceptible to close range harrassment, and if your team lets you (Rammus, Skarner, anyone supertanky jungler). Champions such as Tryndamere who need to get close to the minions to sustain themselves in lane are weak against tiger Udyr's. The same is true for Cho'gath and Irelia, though she can get by easier post-6 because of her ult. However, against champions top like Yorick, Warwick, GP etc.. the harrass isn't as potent. The less sustain the opponent has, the more effective tiger will be. For example if they engage you into a 1v1 fight at top, an Irelia or WW is likely to defeat you because of more sustain when attacking, and tiger only providing spike for harrassment. This is where pheonix is superior, and why personally I find it far more consistent for success with Udyr.
    Pheonix
Really the only thing tiger has over pheonix is swift burst and DoT. Other than that, pheonix is far more useful. Level pheonix if your opponent is a self sustainable champion with lane-pushing power. With pheonix you can push a lane as fast as any other solo top. It also has MUCH more sustain DPS than tiger. Later in the game it becomes more useful for teamfights because of it's AoE's. Whereas with tiger unless you are building damage, you will have substantially less damage over the course of the teamfight. Pheonix also allows you to build much more tanky, whilst maintaining high DPS because of it stacking off AP. Tiger stacks off AD which is not a very common stat in tank items. But because pheonix stance grants essentially more damage for more auto attacks, tank items such as Wits End become exceptional for pheonix Udyr. To sum up, tiger stance can be more useful in very situational circumstances, but for later game and just generally, pheonix will yield more success.
Bear in mind however, it is not unheard of to max both pheonix and tiger to level 5, neglecting bear stance. This can work against teams that can't kite/chase particularly well, thus meaning bear stances' higher levels would be rendered almost useless. Which stance you max first is completely situational. For jungle I would always take pheonix. For lane it would depend on my laning opponent.

  • Items

    Tiger
As Tiger Udyr, you want to start with  Cloth Armor (or  Boots of Speed if opponent is lowharrass or AP) into  Wriggle's Lantern with  Boots of Speed somewhere between. Upgrade your boots to Merc's or Ninja Tabi (Ninja Tabi is really strong early against AD opponent, but you might wanna change to Merc later in the game if you go for Ninja tabi). After Wriggle's, go for  Phage. If the opponent is AP, or they got 2 AP (jungle+mid), you might want a  Negatron Cloak or  Spirit Visage (increasing healing, cd + mr). After that, finish Phage to a  Trinity Force. After this, it's pretty much situational. I recommend tanky items, such as  Banshee's Veil (for bursts à la Karthus/Sion ult/stun) [item=Randuins Omen] [item=Force of Nature] Frozen Heart (OP)  Wit's End
Phoenix (Jungle+Lane For Phoenix Udyr,  Cloth Armor is really good both for lane and jungle. [item=Heart of Gold] and sometimes  Philosopher's Stone (built into Shurelyas) good options. You want boots before the GP/5's. Rush a  Wit's End, and build your Cloth into [item=Aegis of Legion]. Now, it really depends on your oponents.  Frozen Heart, [item=Randuins Omen], [item=Force of Nature],  Shurelya's Reverie are all good options.

  • Working in the team

    Teamfight Tiger Stance
Tiger is built less tanky than Pheonix, which means you aren't anywhere as tanky. This means you have one goal: squishy annihilation. Tiger has high spike damage compared to pheonix, and the most important thing in a teamfight is to remove the enemies' high damage outputs. This will primarily be their ranged carries or their mages. Udyr is quite easily kited, unfortunately, because of having no insta-gap-closers, so this means that you may not be given a choice whether to go for a mage or a ranged carry; basically it's the closest squishy to you in the fight.
If you enter tiger stance, you will stack a tiger proc for your next hit, once you've done this, chase to the nearest squishy in bear stance and stun them, this will also deal the tiger's damage. Once they are stunned from bear and being spiked from tiger, you should be able to re-enter tiger pretty soon, to spike them a second time with tiger. This double-tiger trick isn't always possible to achieve, but if you can see the fight coming, it's fairly easy to execute if practiced, and can completely destroy squishies over the course of 3-4 seconds. So with tiger in teamfights remember:
-You aren't main tank so you can't soak up damage as effectively
-It's more useful as tiger to hunt down squishies and stick to them until they die as opposed to staying in the thick of the maelstrom
    Teamfight Pheonix Stance
With pheonix you should have gone more or less full tank build, this means that you can initiate fights by flashing to a squishy and bear stance stunning them or just Shurelya's into them with bear stance and soak up lots of CC. Once the fight has started, enter pheonix stance first, and then you can do 1 of 2 things:
1: After entering pheonix, switch to bear stance and run from target to target stunning them with a single hit, basically functioning as a stun-bot for your team. This is effective as Udyr because you will have pheonix stance's AoE working as you run around in the teamfight in bear stance. You may have to switch back to pheonix every now and then to get the AoE going again. Use turtle stance whenever you are about to take a large spike, or are at a distance from an enemy and need to keep your passive's stacks up. If you aren't close to the enemy and you aren't taking damage, just use bear stance to close the gap.
2: Use bear stance to initiate, then switch to pheonix and keep activating pheonix/bear to focus down targets your team is focusing. Try to stay in the thickest part of the fighting, so that your pheonix's AoE will get off as much damage as possible. If you have chosen to max both tiger and pheonix, switch between the two, using the tiger stance procs to strike squishies if they are close. The AS from tiger will help with pheonix procs and massively increase your DPS, so try to activate tiger BEFORE pheonix, unless you are being kited, in which case the extra AD from pheonix will help more with the spike from tiger.
You may need to simply spam turtle stance, if they enemy team has an obsession with bashing their heads against you. In this case, turtle and bear will be your primary tools in the teamfight, as Udyr always needs at least 2 spells to switch between to keep his passive stacked up.

  • Summary

I'm sorry that I didn't update this guide for such a long time. I simply got bored, and also had a break from League for a while. Meanwhile, I've been going up and down the ladders on NA, and recently I switched over to EU West to get better ping (had 200+ on NA, 35 on EU). On EU, I climbed the ladder fast, and I think it's mostly because I actually can lasthit without problems now. I haven't played Udyr too much lately, but got a friend of me helped me out with this guide (Pukefast on EUW), though I do have a lot of knowledge on how Udyr works, what's he's good at and whatnot. My strength is probably my experience, and my knowledge to how the game works, and therefore I think this guide shows a very viable way of playing both Tiger and Phoenix. The reason I left out Tiger Jungle is pretty much because I hate it. Phoenix is so much more useful, as it let's you clear camps faster, and be more useful when it comes to fights. The guide is still not completely finished, I'll add more stuff soon, and try to update it more often.I'm not sure how active Leaguecraft is, but if it is, I might start working on another guide, so stay tuned :) I've also started streaming, so follow me on http://www.twitch.tv/bysanlull (own3d is fucked up at the moment, but I'll switch back there if it starts working fine again).
Thanks for reading the guide, feel free to rate it and leave comments :)
