Icathian Surprise This passive can help you finish off people who tower dive you or if you die during a team fight the aoe damage can sometimes turn the tide in your team's favor. Its pretty straight forward. When you die you can run around and chase people before you blow up. Caustic Spittle Useful for increasing your armor pen and if someone gets close enough to you provides decent damage and increases your armor pen by an ungodly amount. Has a .7 ratio. It wont hit terribly hard at end game but the bonus armor pen is always nice to have. Bio-Arcane Barrage This is the skill that my build will focus on. It is like your own personal Madred's Bloodrazor that increases your range... except it does double the health % of Bloodrazor. More on this later. It takes 100 Ability Power to raise your % health damage by 1%. Keep this in mind as we move forward in the build. Void Ooze Great skill for early game farming and harass. We take this first to help get first blood. Has a very good slow at max level and does decent damage. You will want to use this in combination with your ult to guarantee hits with it. Living Artillery Very cool ultimate. Even better that you can spam it. The mana cost caps at 250. Base mana cost is 40 as long as you don't use it consecutively within 6 seconds of each seperate cast. Use this to scout bushes, harass tower huggers, and snipe people that run away from you. Rank 3 of this skill has a range that allows you to snipe past the inhibiter if you are standing at the entrance to the base. :)
Hi! My name is tootallball and so far my experience with Kog'Maw is somewhat limited. But from the few games I have played I have developed a strategy that utilizes his Bio-Arcane Barrage to shred enemies to pieces. That's enough about me, I don't really have anything interesting to say here. I know Kog'Maw just came out, and that no one really has much experience with him. But I plan on playing him exclusively to make this guide the best guide on Kog'Maw out there.
Note: I will be updating this when I can for clarity and content. This is my first guide and it won't be perfect at first. But once I figure out the neat little tricks you can do on these guides I'll have it looking pretty in no time :)
I also realize that building him as AP is quite viable as well. I plan on adding an AP section once I have enough time to try it out.
June 25, 2010 - Added Gameplay section and updated item list using suggestions from comments. Also added the champion builder feature.
This section is for those who want to keep my guide up during game for item reference or if you just don't feel like reading my reasoning on each item. We'll also call this the TLDR portion of the guide.
I will list the items and the order in which you buy them from top to bottom:
Meki Pendant Health Potionx2
Boots of Speed Chalice of Harmony
Sorcerer's Shoes or Mercury's Treads
Greater Mark of Insight Greater Seal of Evasion Greater Glyph of Clarity
Greater Quintessence of Fortitude x3
Make sure you take [spell=Archaic Knowledge] and [spell=Sunder].
I like to build Kog'Maw has a hybrid focused on his Bio-Arcane Barrage and [item_text=Madred's Bloodrazor].
I start my games with a Meki Pendant and 2 Health Potion. As Kog'Maw, you should be hanging back and avoiding enemy harassment as much as possible while using Void Oozeto farm and harass your opposition.
When you get 850g go back and buy Chalice of Harmony to solve your mana problems for the rest of the game and Boots of Speed. However, if you are dominating your lane and are not having problems farm until you absolutely need to go back. You don't want to abandon you're lane domination to buy your items.
On your next trip back buy Sorcerer's Shoes and then begin to purchase Guinsoo's Rageblade. Sorcerer's Shoes help up the damage of all of your abilities. You could also go with Mercury's Treads if you need more survivability. I like to buy Blasting Wand first because it buffs my ultimate and abilities and then the Pickaxe to finish it.
Now is when the build really begins to shine. At this point in the game you should be around level 10 and should stick with your team to gank. Try to farm as much as possible to start saving up for [item_text=Madred's Bloodrazor]. Once you get this item, combined with our Bio-Arcane Barrage, you take ~11% of our target's max health on each attack. OP? I'd like to think so.
IF your game is still going after your [item_text=Madred's Bloodrazor], you start buying the parts to [item_text=Zhonya's Ring]. When you buy your first part you will gain an additional 1% damage on your Bio-Arcane Barrage. Additionally, once you complete your [item_text=Zhonya's Ring], you have a nifty little active that can buy you some time in team fights if you are getting focused. Please don't forget to use it. You fail if you forget that a [item_text=Zhonya's Ring] can save your ass.
Update: Someone suggested in a comment that Tear of the Goddess would be a good first item on Kog'Maw. I just tested it out and I must say it was very nice having it. I had about 2k mana by level 15. It allowed for endless ult spam. Both Chalice of Harmony and Tear of the Goddess are good starting items for him. If you choose to go with the Tear start with a Sapphire Crystal instead of a Meki Pendant.
Masteries + Runes
I like to run a 21/0/9 mastery build.
I plan on testing a 21/9/0 build soon. I don't know if it would be worth it to lose the [spell_text=Haste] in favor of [spell_text=Nimbleness]. I will update at a later date.
Greater Mark of Desolation x9
Greater Seal of Evasion x9
Greater Glyph of Clarity x9
Greater Quintessence of Fortitude x3
I choose Greater Mark of Insight for magic pen to add damage to his abilities.
I choose Greater Seal of Evasion to add a little bit more survivability. You should be staying at the back of teamfights but that little bit of dodge could be the difference between you living and you dying in a gank. I could also see Greater Seal of Clarity being viable if you cannot afford the dodge seals.
I choose Greater Glyph of Clarity to help with his mana regen rate. Its pretty straight forward.
Prior to level 6 your focus is on farming as much as possible. Which is why you focus on Void Ooze early. One rank in Bio-Arcane Barrage is good enough for now.
After level 6 you want to focus on maxing your Bio-Arcane Barrage and grabbing Living Artillery when possible. Save Caustic Spittle for last. The slow from Void Ooze is too good to justify taking Caustic Spittle over it.
As always, this is a matter of personal preference. IMO Ghost and Cleanse are the best options. If you are partial to Flash I understand. However, Flash only gets you so far. Ghost will help you get away much better IMO. Again, this is a matter of personal preference. Both Ghost and Flash are viable. It depends on which you like better. Cleanse is a must however. It saves you from Ashe's arrow, Malzahar's ult, and Ignite. If you aren't high enough level you can substitute Exhaust for Cleanse instead.
You are more than welcome to take any spell you chose, however Kog's biggest problem is survivability and since he has no escape mechanism I like to cover that with my summoner spells.
This is what Kog'Maw looks like at the conclusion of the build. Only costs around 11k gold which is fairly reasonable for any person to earn during a game. The 6th spot is left open for an item of your choosing. I recommend Guardian Angel for the added survivability.
Much thanks to PHANtastic for showing me how to get this Builder in the guide.
Game Play Tips
In this section I will breakdown each spell individually and give you some useful tricks and combos you can pull off with them. I will update this section the more I familiarize myself with Kog and his capabilities.
This skill, although not the focus of this build, can really help you bring down tanks in a hurry. I usually hit it right after my Bio-Arcane Barrage to help drop the tank. It does nice damage with our end game build, although it won't nuke someone's face off. Not many neat tricks here, I just use it to up my damage in team fights.
Ahhhh, this is the skill that made me fall in love with Kog'Maw. Kog is different from most ranged carries in the sense that he is designed to kill tanks. That is his calling in life. So at the start of a team fight you want to pop this and begin to melt the opposing teams face off. You will be surprised at how fast their health will drop due to the 8% health lost from this skill and the 4% lost from [item_text=Madred's Bloodrazor]. You can safely stand at the back of the fight and destroy their tank. Once their tank is down you can pick off runners with your Living Artillery. The most fun tank to use this skill against is Cho'Gath. I was taking 500 damage off a Cho on every attack in a game I played earlier. It really is absurd how fast he can burn through 5000 hp. Nerf incoming? I hope not. I would be a sad panda.
This skill, in combination with your ultimate, helps determine whether you are a good Kog'Maw or not. You want to roll this puke in to the middle of the team fight to slow anybody that may try to gtfo. Once you blow a chunk on their entire team you want to continue to target the tank with Bio-Arcane Barrage and make it rain Pacman Jones style on everybody else with Living Artillery. You want to use this to farm early game and harass your lane opponents. This is the skill you also open with in a gank.
Another option for Void Ooze is to use it defensively. If you are being chased roll it behind you and keep going. You will most likely hit their entire team giving you time to escape or your teammates time to come to your aid. Credit to Anzi for submitting this in the comments.
Void Ooze has a long cooldown and its roll is very slow. So be sure that you practice aiming it properly. Landing a successful Ooze on them is the difference between them dying and them living.
His ultimate is just plain ridiculous. I mean seriously, Riot said they were gonna fix the "poking" in this patch and now I see how they did it. You can literally run people off their towers with this ability. During team fights you want to try to hit as many people as possible with this. If you feel confident that you can aim then don't be scared to cast it back to back. BUT! If you are struggling with aim try to learn your opponents movements and predict where they will be. Often times, your opponent won't be paying attention thinking they are at a safe distance. Make sure you remind them that they are never safe from your mortars :).
Other than teamfights, always always always use this to check bushes. Use it it to check Lizard, Golem, Dragon and Baron. This skill has saved my ass more times than I can count just cause I saw that guy who was trying to be sneaky in my bushes :).
As always, I am always open to comments and suggestions. If you have come across a useful trick or combo with Kog'Maw's abilities please share in the comments section and I will be sure to give you credit :)
Pros / Cons
-Amazing Tank killer
-Best range in the game.
-Needs a good tank to be successful which can be difficult in solo queue.
To summarize, Kog'Maw is an amazing champion with incredible range, harassment ability, and tank killing power. I hope you enjoyed reading my guide and if it was helpful for you be sure to upvote so that other people may benefit from it. Have fun and God bless!
