Sona - The Underestimated AD Nuke

Table of Contents

  • Introduction

Ok, so I had someone (Vletts) ask why you would go AD when all of her abilities are only benefitted by AP. I figured I would take a section and explain a little more about combat with AD Sona since I know he is not the only one who wonders this. I used to be skeptical as well...

You're not primarily going to be doing auto attacks to kill champions. She does auto attack a lot, yes, but most of her damage in this build comes from Trinity Force and Power Chord procs. Her Hymn of Valor increases both her AD and AP. When going against other champions, I primarily swap between my Q and W auras (between high offense and high defense).

The goal is to swap auras often enough to proc her passive as often as possible, while also proccing the Trinity Force passive as often as possible. When you have 200 bonus attack damage, and you hit someone with a Hymn of Valor power chord, you will get both procs at the same time. The damage comes out to look something like:

200 (bonus attack damage)+Hymn of Valor's Damage [from power chord]+Sona's normal attack damage

That's not taking into account her Hymn of Valors activation and bonuses which help both her auto attacks, Trinity Force procs, and her abilities. I will still be doing more testing, but I know my combo's have awarded me with a single auto attack with procs that hit for 600+ damage. Another benefit is thats it not 100% physical damage, so it's hard to mitigate her without stacking magic resist and armor.

  • Abilities

    Power Chord
The bread and butter of our AD Sona build. It synchronizes amazingly with Sheen. It's too easy to cycle each of Sona's abilities multiple times in a fight and grab multiple power chords to rock the enemies ear drums until you see their heads explode.

    Hymn of Valor
"But I thought we were going AD?" Yes, but using this spell to proc your passive is a MUST for nuking. Hymn of Valor + Sheen + Power Chord.....do the math...

    Aria of Perseverance
A heal! Yay!!! Also, when you go up against that one champion who just nukes your whole team by him/herself, you can always use this to proc power chord and greatly reduce their damage. I rarely find the need for that, but once again, this is up to your playstyle. ***The heal does count as points for supporting allies***

    Song of Celerity
A nice movement speed buff. Very useful for us as a starting ability since we won't be getting boots immediately. Also strumming this lovely tune will get your team to the towers faster (also nice). I find I use this to proc power chord very infrequently as I use exhaust. But when you find your summoner abilities on cooldown, it's quite useful ***The initial movement burst buff does count as points for supporting allies***

    Crescendo
A good ultimate for team fights. Since we're AD, it's mostly used for the immobilizing (dancing) side-effect. (If you see someone capping a tower, and you have 1 spell before proccing power chord, I tend to run in and use this followed by Hymn of Valor for an instant nuke.)

  • Masteries + Runes

  • Skilling Order

Start with Qx2 and an E (to get allies to towers faster).
You want to work on the heal over the movement speed because it adds to her ability to help in a team fight. That heal could mean the death of an ally. I have saved many a Shaco from a Kog'Maw who died and went running to explode and get that kill from the grave!

  • Items

I find myself using different item builds. I swap between 2.

    Build 1:
I start with Tear of the Goddess (spam your spells before the round starts to get extra mana). I then save up and get my Movement speed 1 boots, and if I have enough, upgrade them into [item=Berserker Greaves] for the extra attack speed. I then move on to getting my Sheen so we can start nuking hard. I then upgrade the Tear of the Goddess into Manamune. After that, then I get Phage. I follow up with Zeal and finish up with Trinity Force. Usually by this point the game is ending, or near ending. For the ones that continues to go on, I have been testing with items with either Lifesteal such as Sanguine Blade or attack speed. Once again, up to your playstyle.

    ______________________________________

    Build 2:
I start with Sheen. Then I get my attack speed boots. Then I get a [item=B.F. Sword]. Then Phage. Then Zeal. Then Trinity Force. Then I build into Infinity Edge. From there, it's the same as build 1. Game should be nearing a close, etc etc.

  • Comat - Auto Attacks? Not really, but yes....

Ok, so I had someone (Vletts) ask why you would go AD when all of her abilities are only benefitted by AP. I figured I would take a section and explain a little more about combat with AD Sona since I know he is not the only one who wonders this. I used to be skeptical as well...

  • Pros / Cons

    Pros:
Sheen and Power Chord make for excellent nuking power. (Improved by Trinity Force)
She has a heal/resistances and movement speed aura to support in team fights or to add to her personal survivability.
Has some AP to counter any armor the enemy may have.
Enemies tend to underestimate her and save her for last.
    Pentakill skin. Nuff said.

    Cons:
Squishier than a lot of champions without resistance items.
Requires aura swapping for the right aura at the right time. (takes practice)

  • Summary

I find this build to be really strong. I have managed to 4 shot a lot of champions with a Simple Hymn of Valor + Sheen/Power Chord strike combo. However, her ability to take a hit can be considered lacking.

If you have any theories or see something that can be improved, I'm always open to suggestions and testing! :)
