please skip to the bottom to see how i play Alistar
Alistar is idealy an ap offtank, selected chiefly to fill a void in a teams cc rather than for his ap or ad dmg. That said, if your team is lacking in AD pick a champ with better AD dmg.
While he can main tank it can be hard to find the balance between threat and survivability and i recommend you have some experience under your belt before you try that role.
This guide will be short and to the point. The kind of guide you can quickly scan before a game, then come back to after for a few of the finer details you may have missed. As the title suggests most of my experience is chiefly from solo queues however i do have a lot of that experience.
It is the first in a series of guides that aims to break champions down into a core build then display the best way to adapt to them to fight at peak potential against the enemy and for the team.
I'll keep ability and build explanation minimal and then have an in depth/hints and tricks build order at the bottom. Cheers for reading, rate and comment!
Trample good sustained dmg if you roll your ability's with it. Pulverize part of ali's iconic combo and CC other champs ulti for Headbutt harassment and cc. i usually level this first Triumphant Roar a noticeable boost to regen. just 1 point early tho Unbreakable Will keep an eye out for true dmg on the enemy team, it is far to common these days. This also gives 2 BF swords at rank 3 so don't forget your edge.
Summoner abilitys, Runes and Masterys
Ghost, Flash please don't argue with me here, if you have a summoner spell you feel your particularly talented with by all means swap it for ghost but every time an Ali enters a game without flash an innocent child dies.
Runes: This is honestly what i use, not whats ideal. magic pen in red, mp5/lvl in yellow, flat cdr in blue and MS quints. I love MS quints.
Mastery's should be 9/0/21 no matter what build you are going, make sure you pick up improved flash, cdr and mana regen.
R then priorities W for extra AP dmg or Q for extra support
Doran's Ring, Ionian Boots of Lucidity, Sheen this is your, you will hit people hard with ability's then even harder with your fist and with any luck a few kills under your belt.
from there you need to decide what role to fill.
Offtank: Rylai's Crystal Scepter, Banshee's Veil, Randuin's Omen
AP or Support: Rabadon's Deathcap, Fiendish Codex upgraded as needed, Rylai's Crystal Scepter
Main Tank: My only real concern with tanking as alistar is getting these items before any harder defense. If you get here without to much trouble from your team then by all means build
Banshee's Veil and Randuin's Omen
Lich Bane is a tricky item to fit in and please please dont make the mistake of making it your first ap item because that actually results in a loss in damage (i think). Basically the more AP you have before you buy this item the better, in fact Ali's base damage is so high i often don't even bother upgrading sheen
In depth build order and tips
start the game with a Doran's Ring and a point into Q and join your partner in the end of your bushes in a side lane. Your Q will often land you FB if the enemy is silly enough to venture forth. Failing that try and play it saif until you reach level two.
From here the aim of your game is the manouver the opponent close to a wall which you can effectively stun them against with your headbutt and follow up with a Q for him and/or his partner to secure a kill or deal heavy damage partner.
Find the balance between spamming your heal and preserving your mana to outlast your enemys, be patient and always ready to punish on your opponents mistakes with a QW or WQ combo. Throw a flash or two in there for easy kills.
There are few enemy combinations that counter alistars CC effectively so i see no reason why you shouldnt go back to base with atleast enough gold for Sheen and Boots of Speed or Ionian Boots of Lucidity and Sapphire Crystal. Even on a bad game i can usually get basic boots and a crystal.
With core finished you need to take a look at your team.If your team lacks any significant AP its best to start with with a Fiendish Codex to round out your CDR.
second look at your team. no tanks? i find a Banshee's Veil gets rid of most of my cc/health/mana problems quite effectively. Thats 3 birds with one stone. Zhonya's Hourglass, Rylai's Crystal Scepter or even a Rabadon's Deathcap all round this build off nicely depending on your feel for the enemy's threats.
Going back to the second look at the team, if you don't need a tank its time to continue down the ap path. Alistar is very flexible however his abilitys ap scaling have been have had a tough time of it in the past with the nerfbat so you should only build as much AP as you have to. However if a champion changed at the last second or happens to be building ad out of the ordinary its still effective steamroll ahead with a Rabadon's Deathcap before upgrading your codex into either a [item=Morello's Evil Tome] or a Deathfire Grasp depending on the health of your enemys.
With worst case scenario's settled lets look at our best case scenario. The combination of alistars abilitys and ratios make him best played as a support champion. Not a season championship gp5 and auras support. Instead you support the area of the team most lacking, specifically the AP champs or the Tanks.
First you can usually finish your [item=Morello's Evil Tome], i stress CDR as the fastest way to increase effectiveness in all aspects of the game. If you have read this far in my guide then hopefully you have all the tools you need to work out where to go from there.
A quick look at main tanking:
Im worried about being flamed on this subject because alistar does have all the tools needed to make a perfectly good main tank. Some would argue that through his ulti he comes as fully fledged tank no matter how you build him and this is true enough on those odd games where circumstances allow it. A true main tank to go toe to toe in an even team fight requires a little something more.
Initiation, check. CC, check. Thats more than a lot of other tanks but it has nothing on quality threat and survivability. Build dmg for threat and they can often blast through even your ulti if you charge in to initiate but build to much survivability and they simply move past you after your cc and kill your team, often before your CDs are back up. Oh and your ulti becomes way less effective.
Now thats not to say a skilled player cant overcome these gaps with an intelligent build but that's just it, intelligence and skill. We live in a post Mordekaiser nerf world now baby, better get used to it.
Thanks for for reading my guide. My goal in all of this is to give summoners a better understanding of how to build in a team and enemy conscious manner while still optimizing your champions key ability's and role. Once again, rate and comment!
