Amumu: AP with just a smidgeon of tank

Amumu Build

Table of Contents

  • Introduction

    1. Just noticed that my build is very similar to that of Amumu - Harmless? Think again by Zomboid which, while being a bit outdated (3.5% of enemies' health each second by despair still? I wish) is quite good. This was an accident bu credit where credit's due, and Zomboid clearly came to the same conclusion about Amumu as I have. He's a carrying beast :)

  • Summoner Spells/Masteries

I'm a pussy so I get Flash and Ghost, but you can get whatever suits your playstyle.

  • Items

Mercury's Treads Sunfire Cape Rylai's Crystal Scepter Abyssal Scepter Will of the Ancients Rabadon's Deathcap

So pretty much, what I did here can, and should, be changed all the time.
There are, however, some exceptions. Sunfire Cape should always be second, after either Mercury's Treads or Ninja Tabi, depending on whether the enemy team is AD or AP heavy. I prefer Mercury's treads because of the tenacity, but Ninja Tabi are much cheaper and allow you to buy Sunfire Cape earlier.

The next step after Sunfire Cape is situational. If there is a dominant AD champ on the other team, buy Thornmail, if there's a dominant AP champ, buy a Banshee's Veil.

If no one is dominating, time to start hurting them. Time for a Rylai's Crystal Scepter. The idea behind this is that you enter each and every fight with despair turned on, so Rylai's gives you an AOE slow. It also gives you AP which comes into play later. Next is Abyssal Scepter which does pretty much the same as your passive, lowers enemies' MR, and gives you AP. These two are what contributes most to your Despair, letting you tear through the enemies health. I'll mention this later.

Pretty much, the first four items in the list are generally all that you'll get in a game before it's over, win or lose. The next two in my list are just some others that can work in a very aggressive, and incredibly fun, Amumu build: Will of the Ancients gives you spell vamp which works nicely with Despair, and Rabadon's Deathcap gives you some AP, which helps in a way that I'll explain later in the skills section.
For a bit more survivability, particularly against AP, try [item=Force of Nature]

  • Skilling Order

Bandage Toss first, for early ganking. Then it's maxed last.
Tantrum is the second spell, and should have two points before despair
Despair is the maxed once Tantrum has two points
Curse of the Sad Mummy is maxed whenever possible

  • Abilities

    Cursed Touch
Takes down MR. Works well with Despair.

    Bandage Toss
Great for initiating a fight Bandage toss/ult on whole enemy team combo is brilliant

    Despair
The damage from Amumu. With this build it's beastly.
    Lets do the math:
First off, lets say you've got 200 AP, to be conservative. You've got maxed out despair and have a sunfire cape, a rylai's and an abyssal sceptre.
The enemy tank has 6000 health, so they're doing alright. :)
Your carry is playing well, and he's an AD champ, so the enemy, lets call them Cho'Gath, has health and armour.

You come in 1v1 with despair turned on. Now here's the maths of it all: your abyssal sceptre, combined with your passive removes their measly MR. So your magic damage is true damage. Each second you deal 24 (despair) + 35 (sunfire cape) magic damage, which is roughly equal to 1% of the enemy's total health. So 1% + 2.7(+2 from AP)% from despair. Each second you deal 5.7% of their total health in what equates to true damage. 100% / 5.7% = 17.5 seconds, without any other damage, to kill the enemy ubertank. Fair effort? Plus they're slowed with Rylai's so they can't get away.

MR removes some of this, but your debuffs from passive and abyssal sceptre remove some MR.

Best thing? See that Yi with beastly lifesteal? Run in front of him or chase him, with despair on, and watch his health melt away, while he can't catch you thanks to the slow. He pops his ulti? Bandage toss his ass and then continue on as above.
    /all Nice lifesteal Yi :P

    Tantrum
Good for farming creeps early on, but, I think, fairly useless as I generally lane

    Curse of the Sad Mummy
Amazing ultimate, if you can get their whole team in a team fight, it's often GG

  • Working in the team

Initiate, ult their whole team, and then stay in the middle of their team with despair on, spamming tantrum, while your team owns them.
