The top echelon of players consider Mordekaiser a bad champion, unreliable and useless in an organized state of play. I just think people are building & using him incorrectly. Now, a lot of people build Mordekaiser as a tank, why? I don't know. He offers nothing of value when used as a "tank" (I use that word lightly with Morde) or an off tank.
Mordekaiser by design cannot save his support/carries, he has zero crowd control, so why do people waste gold & farm on items that make him dead weight? Yes, you'll be hard to kill but that's about it. I personally believe Mordekaiser should be played as AP, his ratio's are very good considering all of his skills are aoe's & late game he is probably the hardest hitting AP carry in the game when built correctly.
The main purpose of this guide is to teach you how to one shot just about everything once you pick up Lich Bane. Wait a second...Lich Bane on Mordekaiser? Yeah, it seems odd, you're probably thinking it's bad right now. It has mana, it's not a tank item etc. Know what isn't bad though? Hitting over 1-2k with MoS only having three items worth of AP. Yes, a 1-2k damage Mordekaiser nuke on a 2.5-4 second cooldown.

Iron Man (Innate): 25/27.5/30% of the damage dealt from abilities is converted into a temporary shield, absorbing incoming damage. Maximum shield strength is 90 + (30 x level). The shield decays by 3% per second.
An extremely good & unique passive. It's pretty straight forward; More damage = More shield, consistently hitting with your abilities will give you near invulnerability if used correctly.
Mace of Spades (Active): On next hit, Mordekaiser swings his mace with such force that it echoes out, striking up to 3 additional nearby targets, dealing magic damage. If the target is alone, the ability deals 75% more damage.
Additional target radius: 600
Cost: 25/32/39/46/53 health
Cooldown: 8/7/6/5/4 seconds
Magic Damage: 80/110/140/170/200 (+1 per bonus attack damage) + (+0.4 per ability power)
Single Target Magic Damage: 140/192.5/245/297.5/350 (+1.75 per bonus attack damage) + (+0.7 per ability power)
This is the back bone of my Mordekaiser build, late game this will be single target nuking for well over 1k damage, with a full item build single target MoS's can hit for over 2k. This skill has extremely good scaling, can hit extremely hard on one target or be used as a decent aoe nuke (500+ splash damage). Although this build revolves around the constant use of MoS with the Lichbane proc it will not have leveling priority over Siphon of Destruction.
[spell=Creeping Death] (Active): Unleashes a protective cloud of metal shards to surround an ally, increasing their armor and magic resistance and dealing magic damage per second to enemies in the cloud for 6 seconds.
Cloud radius: 250
Cost: 26/32/38/44/50 health
Cooldown: 20/18/16/14/12 seconds
Armor & Magic Resist: 10/15/20/25/30
Magic Damage: 24/38/52/66/80 (+0.2 per ability power) per second
A good all around skill, does decent aoe damage and adds Armor & Magic resist. A lot of people like to focus leveling this up after SoD but I find it to be of little use, most people will not be tanking Mordekaiser's damage so a mediocre DoT/resistance buff on a fairly long cooldown just isn't worth it until end game in my opinion.
Regardless, late game this skill is amazing. It will be ticking for quite a bit of damage (easily around 250+ damage) to everything in its vicinity, with this skill active, spell vamp and the constant use of your other skills you will be extremely hard to take down even with focus fire.
Siphon of Destruction (Active): Mordekaiser damages enemies in a cone in front of him, dealing magic damage. For each unit hit, Mordekaiser's shield absorbs additional health.
Cooldown: 6 seconds
Cost: 24/36/48/60/72 health
Magic Damage: 65/105/145/185/225 (+0.6 per ability power)
Additional Shield Health: 1/2/3/4/5 per unit hit
Everything about this move is amazing, Mordekaiser's best laning phase skill & his best farming skill. This does everything, nice damage, harassment, farms, and fills up your shield extremely quick. Siphon of Destruction is the first skill you will prioritize leveling.
Children of the Grave (Active): Mordekaiser deals damage to the target and curses at it for 10 seconds, stealing life. Damage is equal to a percentage of the target's maximum health. If the target dies while under the effect of the curse, their soul is enslaved and will follow Mordekaiser for 30 seconds. During this time, Mordekaiser gains 20% of their ability power and attack damage. The spirit gains 75% of Mordekaiser's adjusted damage, ability power, and health totals.
Cooldown: 120/105/90 seconds
Initial Life Stolen (Magic Damage): 12/14.5/17% (+0.02% per ability power)
Curse Life Stolen (Magic Damage): 1.2/1.45/1.7% (+0.002% per ability power) life per second
Curses a target, if the target dies you just won the team fight, plain and simple. Useful throughout the entire game, deadly in the laning phase, deadly in team fights, has a very short CD & with a full AP build this will be an extremely devastating DoT.
Essentially you want to prioritize carries (especially ranged carries) with Children of the Grave but every fight has different situations where this will be best used.
+ in conjunction is extremely deadly.
Ghost + Ignite
Flash + Ignite
These are basically the only summoner spells you will ever use on Mordekaiser. Ghost allows you to chase & stick to your targets a lot easier, Flash allows for great escapes/initiates, and Ignite secures kills when used with Children of the Grave.
If you're in a counter pick position and absolutely need different summoner spells you can opt to pick up Exhaust to counter hard carries or Cleanse in case they have a lot of crowd control.
Masteries & Runes
There are two Mastery + Rune combinations I use so I will briefly explain each one and their uses.
Runes 1: Focus on early game survivability and lane dominance.
Greater Mark of Insight
Greater Seal of Resilience
Greater Glyph of Warding
Greater Quintessence of Fortitude
Magic penetration, Armor + Magic resist and Health. Every single thing you need to have a successful early/mid game.
Greater Seal of Vitality
Health per seals can also be used for an extremely large early game health pool.
Runes 2: Focus on AP and damage output.
Greater Mark of Insight
Greater Seal of Force
Greater Glyph of Force
Greater Quintessence of Potency
A Magic penetration & full AP rune page. Nice damage throughout the entire game.
This mastery build is cooker cutter & focuses on the defensive tree while also picking up the important offensive tree masteries. It offers survivability and allows you to out harass your lane quite easily. My personal favorite, early game health & increased resistances makes Mordekaiser extremely beefy in the laning phase.
This mastery build focuses on the utility tree, it offers increased movement speed & cooldown reduction, while also picking up the important offensive tree masteries.
Greater Glyph of Focus
In combination with 9/0/21 is a decent amount of passive cooldown reduction allowing for constant use of your spells.
Skilling Order R>E>Q>W
Generally most Mordekaiser's skill order will be R>E>W>Q, while that isn't bad by any means it just doesn't make sense to me. I prioritize R>E>Q>W, the reason is simple, no one decent will be tanking a full duration Creeping Death, so why prioritize the skill over a massive single target + aoe nuke on a shorter cool down? I can't think of any reason. This build focuses on damage potential, Mace of Spades and Siphon of Destruction offer the most damage output early & midgame, end game when the item build is finished Creeping Death will also be maxed and be capable of doing 200+ aoe damage every tick.
Children of the Grave
Mordekaiser's ultimate, should be prioritized when capable of being skilled.
Siphon of Destruction
Mordekaiser's best farming tool, best harassing ability, and his highest shield regenerating skill. This skill is prioritized and level up before anything else strictly because of it's massive utility.
Mace of Spades
Mordekaiser's hardest hitting ability, leveled behind SoD. Focusing leveling this makes Morde an extreme 1v1 threat. MoS + SoD will literally shred though anything once this is leveled. I prioritize this over Creeping Death for the early & mid game domination.
A very good spell when Morde has the AP to make use of the aoe damage. Put a point in it at 4 for the utility then level it last.
Sight Ward + Health Potion
Just thought I'd throw these in there. Sight Ward's & Health potions are OP, use them!
Elixir of Brilliance
These are amazing once you have your core and spare gold.
One of the most cost effective items in League of Legends & the absolute best starting item for Mordekaiser. It offers Health, Armor & Health regen, this item in combination with Masteries + Runes makes Morde extremely durable in the laning phase.
Covers his need for Magic Pen. Sorc Shoes + Magic penetration + Masteries will be sufficient throughout most of the game.
An amazing item, gives great lain sustainability, health regen & completely negates the health cost of your skills. The best part about this item is it scales throughout the entire game. Probably one of the most important items on Mordekaiser.
The best raw AP item in the game. This item will increase your damage ten fold.
Lich Bane on Mordekaiser. He has two very short cooldown spammable aoe nukes always proccing the Lich Bane affect. This item will allow you to take close to 700+ damage off of towers, it stacks on your Mace of Spades next hit allowing it to nuke for 1-2k damage. It gives move speed & magic resist, basically everything about this item is amazing on a Melee AP nuker.
Core for all AP carries who want to maximize damage endgame.
Rylai's Crystal Scepter
A very good item with very good stats for an AP Morde, it also offers him a minor aoe slow giving him some sort of CC. Generally I only get this as a luxury item when I have everything else. It's really good but I like to go for early/mid game domination so rushing a 20 minute Death Cap is usually more ideal.
Only used when the enemy team has several forms of CC & you're the main target. Extremely good and the only item in the game to offer CC reduction.
If the other team has heavy AP nukes that are giving you problems.
If the other team is AD heavy and they are giving you problems.

If you get an early first blood, HoG's are amazing.
Your starting off item for the laning phase will be Doran's Shield. There is no other item that gives these stats for such little gold.
Farm your lane, last hit correctly while harassing & taking minimal damage. Mordekaiser's very weak for the first couple of levels so play carefully. When you need to go to town push your lane to the enemies tower so you'll miss as little creep kills as possible & blue pill. Pick up T1 boots, a ward + some Health Potions & whatever you can afford, two Amplifying Tomes would be ideal(hopefully you can get at least an Amplifying Tome).
Right now the game is around 10 minutes, you should have around 1000g-1.2kg in farm already in an ideal game. Keep farming, place your ward so you don't get ganked. You're at least level 6-7 right now so looking for a kill or help from your jungle would be the best option, if not...Oh well, just farm until you can afford 1-2x Hextech Revolver's.
This will be your core item build for mid game until you work your way up to a Death Cap, with just two Revolvers you will have amazing Spell Vamp & a nice amount of AP.
Basically around 20-25 minutes right now, you have 2x Revolvers & Death Cap, you're doing a lot of aoe damage right now. At this point in the game you start building your Lich Bane, it doesn't necessarily matter what item parts you buy first just get whatever you can afford.
Generally this will be your final Item build, your going to be hitting like a truck and doing over 1k damage Mace of Spades.
If you're capable of getting these items that means the game went on longer than 40 minutes, congratulations you're going to be hitting for 2k+ with Mace of Spades...Lol.
Working in the team
You're full AP, your job is to do massive amounts of damage. Unlike, a tanky Morde you cannot initiate. Don't be fooled though the sheer amount of damage you put out mid/end game with this item build allows for insane shield regeneration (More damage = More Shield)coupled with the fact you have 40% spell vamp & Creeping Death giving you resistances + 200-300 damage aoe dot that lasts for 6 seconds, almost nothing will be able to kill you unless you are stunned without Creeping Death up.
Play carefully and make wise decisions, you can't just run in 1v5 and come out alive. If you get a succesful combo off on an enemy carry you will get a Children of the Grave ghost and the team fight will usually be won.
This Mordekaiser build works best when you are the dedicated AP & you have a dedicated tank like Amumu etc.
Pros / Cons
- Hits extremely hard. Single target MoS 1-2k damage, aoe MoS 400-500 damage, SoD easily 500-700 damage, Creeping Death 200-300 aoe dot.
- Mordekaiser is a very good farmer, so farming this core item build is quick. Get this core & you can 1v2-3 just about anything.
- Children of the Grave will do a lot of damage, Ultimate + Ignite + 1 E and that carry will be close to death even if they have Banshee's.
- Hits towers for a good 400-900 damage.
- Squishy unless you can keep your shield up.
- No CC.
- No CC.
- No CC.
- Did I mention no CC?
That's the end of this short item build, hopefully you actually try it out before you bash Lich Bane because it isn't perceived as a core item on Mordekaiser. Seriously,... try this build and see how much potential damage you're capable of putting out. Anyways, thanks for reading! :)

Been waiting for someone to post a Lichbane core for Mordekaiser. I've been using it for quite some time, just to much of a procrastinator to write a guide xD. If you'd like recorded games demonstrating the OPness of this build then look no farther:
^ Link to my replay archive. Has a multitude of uploads but the ones you see with a rather decent KDA are the AP/Lich Bane ones.
^ A very good demonstration of the Lich Bane/AP Mordekaiser potential, granted the enemy team was trolling hard with 5 revive and 5 teleport. But the effect of Lich bane Mordekaiser is still there. Only thing I wish I had gotten was a deathfire grasp to really unload a nuke on whatever I wanted to die first.
I would suggest in the early game getting sorc boots and haunting guise, they are just too good for their combine cost (less than 2500 I believe) and then you sell the Haunting guise to either help get that deathcap or lich bane or deathfire grasp personally.
All in all a great guide for those experienced with Mordekaiser that want to do some carrying instead of being a bruiser with no taunt that people demand tank himself out with FoN/Thornmail/Randuin's/Warmogs/Merc/????
