Soraka Build

Table of Contents

  • Abilities

    [spell=Consecration]
    Consecration (Passive): Increases surrounding allies' magic resistance by 16

    16 MR is not much late game, but it helps early game against harassing by spells. Overall it is kind of useless but it does help a little.

    Starcall
    Massively buffed OP skill. 2.5 BASE COOLDOWN, not including the 15% cdr you start with. Max first for godly zoning powers. don't specifically build AP for the damage on this though, you are not a mage.

    Astral Blessing
    Massively nerfed heal, you can't sustain stupid people anymore. Which is why, you need to be aggressive yourself to keep them from taking the heat. AP build is now silly because of the bad rates on the heals. CDR is not as important to max because your heals are now "clutch".

    [spell=Infuse]
    Nerfed mana return on this. Take 1 rank for CC, max last. Don't get tricked with the ap rate buff, its still just for the cc only, not the damage.

    Wish
    Still nice but bad rates. Tank soraka not so badly hurt after all. CD untouched so still sort of ok.

    10/05/2011

    13/05/2011
    Core build tweaked. I find that most items are situational, and maxing CDR isnt that great until maybe later.

    16/05/2011
    Changed core items for Squishy build, I have decided that snowballs just dont fit soraka. More explanations later, its still viable but for MY build, i no longer use it.
    Experimental Games changed to Game Journal.

    23/05/2011
    More experiments done on Squishy build, major changes to it, and I find that I quite like it actually. Item choices tweaked, and runes changed (major change).

    02/06/2011
    Corrected some minor typos, and updated squishy teamfighting section to fit my current build

    17/06/2011
    Testing out new item builds and orders. Build tweaked a bit

    23/06/2011
    Tanky Build is getting a total revamp. Will be doing this gradually, since the build itself got hit hard with the philostone nerfs, still workable by upgrading before getting a 2nd philo, since we do use both of philostones for upgrading at times. Squishy build is unaffected since it doesnt rely on it.

    28/06/2011
    Interesting new 'AD'playstyle, some rune recommendations and items changed.

    24/06/2011
    Talon patch screwed AP soraka. Removing squishy build.

    06/11/2011
    Started playing Soraka again, gradually rebuilding the guide. many many changes.

  • New Stuff (probably in testing)

    Outdated stuff, nothing new for now.

  • Patch Updates

    v1.0.0.115:
    oh kay....server is down, I am unable to play but there are a few things I can see from the patch notes that look interesting.

    Overall, this patch indirectly buffs Soraka:

    Katarina
    -Killer Instincts healing reduction on Bouncing Blades duration reduced to 5 from 10

    Miss Fortune
    -Impure Shots healing reduction debuff duration reduced to 3 from 8

    Tristana
    -Explosive Shot healing reduction duration is now a static 5 from 3 to 8

    Sweet, a buff to all healers. Heal some more Soraka!!!! However, nothing that affects playstyle or items for now so the guide remains unchanged

    Soraka
    Infuse now grants assist credit on ally cast.

    -Well, this actually does nothing for Tanky build but is a small buff to Squishy build in charging up Mejai's (if blessing is not ready, you are not in range to damage them and you dont feel like wasting wish)

    v1.0.0.116
    No changes related to Soraka as of now.

    v1.0.0.118
    -Vayne patch here!!! lol, i was playing so much i didnt even realize that i missed a patch. Well, the only change I see here that affects this gude would be the Tenacity items, it is now possible to take other boots than mercury's for cc heavy teams. The Moonflair Spellblade and Eleisa's Miracle look pretty viable on Soraka, will comment more on this after seeing the costs of these items and trying them out.

    v1.0.0.120

    -Philosopher's Stone health regen per 5 reduced to 18 from 22.5 and mana regen per 5 reduced to 8 from 10

    -Eleisa's Miracle cost increased to 500 from 400

    -The gold per 10 component of Philosopher's Stone, Heart of Gold, Kage's Lucky Pick, and Avarice Blade is now unique to itself

    Oh My God. Major hurt to gold stacking now, so obviously double Philos isn't gonna work anymore now. And they just HAD to nerf the stats while they were at it too. Eleisa nerf not too noticable, 100g isn't much. Not too bad, just that i have been taking a little more farm than usual, which i shouldnt really be doing.... I'm not too sure about different gold items stacking or not but double philostones were the best on soraka, since we use both of them most of the time. Nothing too big though, the only thing that would change is the item order, since we do use both of the philostones sometimes.

    v.1.0.0.121

    Items
    - Rabadon's Deathcap base ability power reduced to 140 from 155

    Nothing too big, its rare for us to be able to farm up a rabadon's anyway, since we don't rush it, and we don't farm much. besides, its not a particularly large nerf, only about 20 AP total (including the 30% bonus).

    General

    -Fixed areas in brush that did not correctly hide units
    No more putting bad wards by accident, a small buff i guess. You SHOULDN'T be putting bad wards anyway if you practice enough.

    -Teleporting to a ward will now reveal the ward to enemies for a few seconds
    We don't gank, but if there's an ally assassin with teleport, be sure to put it in a brush or somewhere unseen.

    -Locally jumping to ward will now destealth the ward for 2 seconds
    Same thing as above, but this should normally be used as an escape anyway so you can still help people to escape with wards by giving them a 'free' flash.The destealth doesn't matter, the fact that ward jumping has returned is nice.

    Talon Patch

    Soraka

    Recommended Items updated
    Base health increased to 446 from 426

    Starcall
    Cooldown reduced to 2.5 seconds from 3 seconds
    Base damage reduced to 60/85/110/135/160 from 60/90/120/150/180
    Ability power ratio increased to .4 from .25
    Mana cost reduced to 35/40/45/50/55 from 40/50/60/70/80
    Shred increased to 8/9/10/11/12 from 8 at all levels
    Maximum stacks reduced to 10 from 20
    Range increased by 30
    Astral Blessing
    Ability power ratio reduced to .45 from .9
    Cooldown increased to 20 seconds from 10 seconds
    Base Heal increased to 70/140/210/280/350 from 60/120/180/240/300
    Armor buff increased to 25/50/75/100/125 from 20/35/50/65/80
    Armor buff duration increased to 5 seconds from 4 seconds
    Cast range increased to 750 from 650
    Infuse
    Ability power ratio increased to .75 from .6
    Cooldown reduced to 10 seconds from 15 seconds
    Silence duration adjusted to 1.5/1.75/2/2.25/2.5 from 1/1.5/2/2.5/3
    No longer grants double Mana when casting on yourself
    Wish
    Ability power ratio reduced to .7 from 1.3
    Mana cost reduced to 100/175/250 from 200/275/350

    AP rate nerf, a direct hit to AP soraka build. Full AP probably not worth the squishiness anymore, coz you just heal a tiny bit more yet you die twice as fast.

  • Introduction

    DEAR READER, POSSIBLE WALLS OF TEXT MAY OCCUR, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...

    If you're reading this, it means you're thinking about going down the support path. Being a support does not just mean healing, in my definition. Support to me means helping the team in anyway except killing (but that does still come as a bonus occasionally). Going Soraka has a lot of advantages:

    1. Keep yourself and your partner in a kind of perma-laning condition, going back with 2-3k gold while your opponents go home multiple times from harassment

    2. Low gear dependance. As Soraka you dont really need gear to support your team although items do make you a lot better. You can even win the game with just a pair of boots and a catalyst sometimes.
    3. A global heal nuke with a very nice AP ratio, and reasonably low CD to farm for assists

    4. Versatile, you can build many viable builds with her (BUT BE REASONABLE)

    5. Very quick farmer at high levels.

    6. Overall, fun to play with, often underestimated and so use that to your advantage. (More on this in strategy)

    However, there are some disadvantages:

    1. There are Soraka haters around in all Elo levels, prepare to be queue dodged sometimes or flamed for
    no reason.

    2. You will be hated by the enemy and sometimes, their prime focus (may be a good thing)

    3. No kills for you.
    (edit:Not anymore. Fkin OP Starcall).

    4. Lack of hard CC

    5. VERY VERY team dependant, you can be the best Soraka in the world but if you have a fail carry, you will lose, like someone said in the LoL forums, you cant heal people from being noob, and definitely, you cant carry.

    6. Personally, I think she's sort of ugly but I dont care so much

    Ok, now you know what Soraka is like, lets go on to what a support does. As a support character, your job description is:

    1. Healing (your specialty but not only)

    2. Defending lanes while your friend goes to grab kill

    3. Rescuing

    4. Recon (which involves warding)

    5. MIA Calls (Global not just your lane)

    6. Warding

    7. Assisting kills/ganks, which involve:
    a)Harassing till low health
    b)Baiting
    c)Silencing (especially champs with channeled ults)
    d)Offtanking

    8. In general, just keeping your allies happy all the time

    Sounds like a lot eh? Well, being a support is not as easy as it sounds.

    Before starting, take a read of this, it's general stuff that's a really really good read with sound advice about LoL in general, credits to condon: Thou Shalt Read this MFing Thread

    EDIT: good to see that there are more and more people reading, please rate it and tell me why you all like/dislike it so i can further improve the quality of this guide. THANKS!!

  • Pre-game setup

    There is only 1 build I currently go by, and its tank. (you should still have a main tank but late game you'll become a 2nd one).

    Spells:
    1.
    2. /

    Explanation: Flash is pretty much mandatory on all champs with no escapes as of now, so take it. As for CV and Heal, both work nice on soraka. CV gives you map control and safe warding, Heal gives you a huge burst in teamfights worth of heals (and saves mana during laning if you and your ally need more sustain than you can give.)

    I no longer run because I have decided the utility tree is OP, and that sacrificed early tankiness is easily replaced by proper positioning and use of flash. Without , is no longer an option because you will easily get cc'd down before you can run away.

    Masteries:
    9/0/21 or 8/1/21 depending if you take or

    Compulsory -
    Offense:
    [mastery_icon=archmage's savvy] x3
    [mastery_icon=deadliness] x1
    [mastery_icon=sorcery] x4

    Utility:
    [mastery_icon=good hands] x3
    [mastery_icon=perseverance] x1
    [mastery_icon=awareness] x4
    [mastery_icon=meditation] x2
    [mastery_icon=utility mastery] x2
    [mastery_icon=blink of an eye] x1
    [mastery_icon=quickness] x3
    [mastery_icon=intelligence] x3
    [mastery_icon=presence of the master] x1

    Optional:
    For the last 2 masteries which are lacking from the compulsory....
    If you took heal - [mastery_icon=mender's faith]+[mastery_icon=meditation]
    If you took cv - [mastery_icon=mystical vision]+[mastery_icon=archaic knowledge]

    Explanation - The utility tree gives everything you want - short cd on summoners you need often like heal and cv, cdr on your abilities which they nerfed the cdr, and MOVESPEED. Yes my new playstyle involves some extra MS which i'll explain later (when i finish the new guide).

    Runes:
    Greater Quintessence of Vigor/ Greater Quintessence of Swiftness x3
    Greater Mark of Insight x9
    Greater Seal of Clarity x9
    Greater Glyph of Focus x9

    I prefer Greater Quintessence of Swiftness because it enables kiting. in a chase involving no gap closers, you outrun almost anyone while dropping mini meteors on them. And that + [item_icon=rylai's crystal sceptre] is quite ridiculous....

    with the range increase on Starcall, your Q harass > banana shot harass, so do not bother with armor penetration or AD anymore. Just spam that Q.

    Now since I max Q first and E last, you WILL have mana problems (and those guys nerfed the mana return too). Mp/5 runes required.

    With such bad CD on her heal now, you want to scrape as much CDR early as you can without items (thus the runes).

  • Items

    I am aware of the 0 farm support meta that is going on right now, and it IS the right thing to do. Soraka's OP without items anyway but here's the core:

    Core:

    or
    [item_icon=heart of gold]
    [item_icon=rylai's crystal sceptre]
    x5

    Massive change to items. You should be able to finish everything apart from [item_icon=rylai's crystal sceptre] early with 1 or 2 assists.

    1 gold item keeping you sustained, helping you to sustain your ally, another increasing your survivibility. We want that. [item_icon=kage's lucky pick] is bad because your rates are bad, and that little ap wont help you more than that 250 hp from that tortoise shell. Besides, you're set with those 2 items and should be finishing your boots or working on your rylai's now (not forgetting the wards).

    + allows you to escape many many situations that dont involve a hard cc (in which mercs are not needed). Mercs for heavy CC teams as always.

    allows you to chase many people and keep them in your Q range (especially with the MS you have with my settings). Your soft CC and debuffs will earn your allies (or yourself) kills. The damage is strong too especially if you consider that it can hit 5 guys at once.

    Extras:
    - To fill in the hole of MR defense if I need it. HP tanking is only effective up to a certain stage, we get this item for its debuff and the MR, AP sucks now.

    - Same reason as abyssal, filling in for armor because we lack it. Gives all important CDR too, and a nice debuff. Buy if you decide on selling off philo instead of upgrading it.

    [item_icon=force of nature] - If you need more MR. Replace Abyssal with this if needed.

    - If you decide to, skip frozen heart and just upgrade your tortoise shell.

    - upgrade your philo sometime in game, probably after rylai's. It's still a good item.

    - always nice to have if nobody else is building it.

    Build example:

    x5

    (Standard build)

    This normally only happens in very very late game or if you were fed with assists like a mofo. Normally the game ends with only the core items listed above.

  • Warding Sites

    I heard that a picture paints a thousand words, or in this case a thousand wards. hope this helps:

    External Image

    These are the key spots to ward. If you can achieve this in a game, CONGRATULATIONS!!! YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY USED MAP HACK!!! Of course its not realistic to ward all of that dont worry.

    CV area before going in to ward. Keep enemy jungle warded, if you're losing, your team's own jungle because ambushes happen there (and cost games).

  • Farming

    Farming with Soraka is ridiculously easy with a leveled Q. But only do that while defending a pushed lane, or solo pushing in late game, otherwise give them all to your carry. Earlygame while spamming Q, watch your mana, don't Q until you QQ of oom when your ally dies from no heal.

  • Creep Jungling

    Soraka doesnt need to jungle but here's what you could do if you feel like it sometimes

    Wolves: Starcall till dead
    Wraiths: Starcall till dead
    Blue Golem: Starcall + Infuse whenever they off cooldown. Heal if needed. However, ask around who needs it first though, top priorities are champs with toggles like Anivia, Taric and Swain. You are support, you should not be selfish because they need it more than you.
    Red: Give it to the physical dpser, you dont need it at all.
    Dragon: For lols but it will take a while so its quite risky. Same Starcall+Infuse+Heal combo.
    Baron: Don't even think about it, you lack the dps. -80 MR would cool to see though.

  • AP Carry Soraka

    With the recent buffs to her damage, it is actually a viable build now.

    Masteries:

    Utility:
    3 [mastery_icon=Good Hands]
    1 [mastery_icon=Perseverance]
    4 [mastery_icon=Awareness]
    2 [mastery_icon=Utility Mastery]
    3 [mastery_icon=Meditation]
    3 [mastery_icon=Quickness]
    1 [mastery_icon=Blink of an Eye]
    3 [mastery_icon=Intelligence]
    1 [mastery_icon=Presence of the Master]

    Offense:
    3 [mastery_icon=archmage's savvy]
    1 [mastery_icon=deadliness]
    4 [mastery_icon=sorcery]
    1 [mastery_icon=archaic knowledge]

    Runes:
    Quints: Greater Quintessence of Vigor or Greater Quintessence of Fortitude
    Reds: Greater Mark of Insight
    Yellows: Greater Seal of Clarity
    Blues: Greater Glyph of Focus

    Spells:
    This build you are going for the kill. Grab this in case your dps isn't enough. Don't hestitate to KS , forget all your Soraka Taboos and farm as much as you want and kill as well.

    This serves 2 purposes: An escape or a mechanism to land a final ignite/infuse on a low hp opponent.

    Core:
    This round, you will be doing damage. These boots give you more magic pen for you to do more damage especially to squishies.

    You will be playing with Q a lot, so you need some survivibility. Gives HP, and a slow allowing kiting or escaping if needed. (or occasionally chasing). Some AP too, good to have.

    CDR, AP, Mana regen and active. In this build, all of them are useful, active is another nuke for you to use before lowering them with Q.

    A small bit of AP, probably wouldnt even care about it. but hyper-bananas are fun to throw, proc's easily with Q.

    Late game:

    Powers up your damage quite a chunk, since it gives 200 AP alone. Grab this for more dps.

    If the enemies stack MR, grab this. They won't usually bother with a Soraka mage though, the reason they would stack MR would probably be coz of your kart or veigar.

    If you decide to build a tear, upgrade it into this. Get your rabadon's first though

    After you're done with with rabadon's, grab this for some epic dps.

    In game:

    Skillbuild is:
    1. Starcall
    2. [spell=infuse]
    3. Starcall
    4. [spell=infuse]
    5. [spell=infuse]
    6. Wish

    Then it's Wish > [spell=Infuse] > Starcall > Astral Blessing

    Start off with and .

    Note that since you won't have heal, you have less staying power, be a little careful when harassing.

    Your early game dps should outdps many other champ at lvl3 or so, especially the casters. Harass them like there's no tomorrow, drop starcalls on them, infuse them if you have mana, autoattack when in range, recharge yourself when you dont have enough mana. Keep popping an infuse on them whenever it goes off CD. Stay somewhere bout the middle of the minions and keep popping a starcall on them when they get in range.
    If they are scared of your starcalls, show them your appreciation for their fear by walking up and starcalling them more until they cower behind their turret. The standard Infuse+Starcall+Auto combo works here as well.
    When they get low, sometimes its time to flash+ignite+infuse+starcall and get 300g. Judge your own dps before doing so, or you would have blown your flash for nothing.
    Then....it's pretty much farming pushing harassing until turret down, in teamfights you try dropping starcalls safely on as many people as you can and nuke people with your DFG and Infuse. Finish off with ignite if you see a possible kill.
    That's about it, when your team wins a teamfight, you can go to another lane while your team pushes a particular lane and do a dual push with them if the minions are at about the same distance from the turrets on both lanes. Mageraka farms EXTREMELY well, you will get fed in no time even if you didnt get many kills.

  • Summary

    FAQ:
    How did I do?
    First, ask yourself these questions:
    1. Did I let my allies grab my kills?
    2. Did I avoid KSing my allies from their kills?
    3. Did I save my allies countless times?
    4. Were my deaths worth it? (successful baiting, successful rescuing, 3 for 1 kills, offtanking)
    5. Was I present in every teamfight?
    6. Did I know everything the enemy team was trying to do thanks to wards?
    7. Did I show good map awareness this game and call for mias?

    If you answered yes to most of these questions, congratulations. You have had a great game as Soraka, nevermind whether you've won or not. Let the carries brag of their K/D, you don't need aknowledgement, you just like to keep them happy. If you've lost, don't feel too bad. Remember this, if you've tried your best, its not because you're bad, the opponents were better than you are. Just ignore the "**** TRYN FED XIN, GO UNINSTALL YOU **** NOOOOOBBBBB!!!" and dont join in the flaming. It may/may not be your fault that he fed but just try and think of how you can improve, maybe by warning your future lanemates about diving, calling him to stick with the team, etc etc... I.E, you can still improve even if the loss wasn't your fault.

    People troll me for picking Soraka, why is that?
    They either have valid reasons for doing so, or are just another Soraka hater that you can ignore. The valid reasons are:
    1. No main tank: you maybe tanky but you shouldnt be THE tank, try make sure someone picks one and if they autolock their dpsers, then its time to tank for them (Go soraka another game)
    2. Not enough DPS: consider your team comp first, this is general consideration, not just for Soraka players. Try fill in the missing roles, Soraka is good on any team but if you lack damage you will find it a hard game (note that i did not say lose, dont give up just because of team comp!!!)

    "No Soraka please, she's a lousy champ" or "Don't take Soraka or i'ma ragefeed!!!"
    This kind of comments you can ignore. As I said, there are Soraka haters in all elo levels, so just feel free to use the ignore function and show them what you can do. Soraka is not lousy, she is in NO WAY UP, in fact in my opinion, slightly OP lulz.

    How should a Soraka Summoner behave?
    1. No Ragequitting. No matter how bad you/your team are doing, never rage quit. You are the support of the team, what happens if you take away the support of anything? They fall apart. You have to be with your team all the time, regardless of whether or not its 4v5 or 3v5 already as their support.

    2. Nerdraging. Is. Unsightly. Especially on you as a support. Soraka should be a kind creature, supporting her team at times of need instead of raging at them. Even with a bad player on your team, a simple "please dont dive" or "back, you're overextending" is so much better than a "ZOMGWTF XXXX, YOU'RE SO BAD GO UNINSTALL!!!" This Anti-Rage Guide by Lu Caos is a good one to read, and hopefully will prevent nerdraging from happening again.

    3. Real life > Games. Obvious but some people don't seem to know that. About what i said about ragequitting, leaving a game is fine if you have a legit reason (e.g, an emergency). But don't start a game when you have school in 20 minutes, DUH. Don't game too much till your real life is jeopardized (health, studies, work, etc). Soraka wouldnt want her summoner to be in bad condition just to play her either.

    So, I hope you enjoyed the read. I will put up more info once I get more data. Keep the feedback coming in, your encouragement is my strength :)
