My recommendation
There is lots of way of playing Sona, and the most played and most successful is SUPPORT/AP. I dont think you need to ask me why, if you have seen her skills.
-
Summoner Abilities
Flash – Flash is a must for supports. Cause you will get targeting a lot. With stuns, slow, fear, exhaust, and so on. So you really want to jump out before that. A GOOD escape skill, and if you want a last hit kill use it, but make sure that there will be no ganks and make sure you be able to escape from a turret dive if you are going for it.
Ghost- Good for both chasing/help your fellow teammates and escape, same for Flash.

Masteries + Runes
Runes:
Greater Mark of Insight x 9 - deals additional damage while using Q(
Hymn of Valor), R(
Crescendo), when they got armor(specially against tanks).
Greater Seal of Focus x 9 – more cooldowns on all your skills, i.e more heals, dmg, and faster to activate the running skill.
Greater Glyph of Potency x 9 – more ability power, i.e more dmg, more healing.
Greater Quintessence of Focus x 1 - more cooldowns on all your skills, i.e more heals, dmg, and faster to activate the running skill.
Greater Quintessence of Celerity x 2 - - more cooldowns on all your skills, i.e more heals, dmg, and faster to activate the running skill.
Masteries:
I am going for 9/0/21

I don’t find EXP is needed for Sona, so I rather get those two points for my summoning skills.

Skilling Order
![External Image]()
This is when you have less annoying opponent champions on your lane, i.e some melee attackers. Let just say none long range. And also if your laning partner is not squeezy.
Or else I will prefer this
![External Image]()
This is against some annoying long range champions, Ashe, Catilyn and so on.

Items
Let say this is more an AP build. But also a good support cause the more AP you got the more healing you have.
Start always with
Meki Pendant x 1,
Health Potion x 1,
Mana Potion x 1. You will have a little problem with mana, so try and save it just for heal while on level 1 or 2. If you start with
Hymn of Valor, the healing pot will save you until level 2 when you get
Aria of Perseverance.
I recommended go back when you are level 6 or 7 if you can hold that long. Just to gain some exp and get lots of gold. Now get
Boots of Speed x 1,
Tear of the Goddess x 1,
Sight Ward or
Vision Ward, depends who you are laning or playing against. Those wards is very good against ganks. Especially when you are playing with random, who you assume never say “ss” during the game. Then go for
Archangel's Staff, and
Mercury's Treads. That is for additional dmg, heal and almost unlimited mana use.
Mercury's Treads is for those annoying champs who targeting you with fear, STUNS, and other negative effects, and it gives you additional magic resist aswell.
The other good items after this will be
Rabadon's Deathcap,
Aegis of the Legion,
Rod of Ages or [item=Soul Shroud] - gives you either extra defense or extra cooldowns.
For more defense get either
Frozen Heart, or
Banshee's Veil
I said or is because you buy those items in different situations. Like
Banshee's Veil, if the opponent team have more AP casters.
Also
Mejai's Soulstealer is a good option, if you have confident for you team and yourself go for it. Many people thinks of soulstealer is a must kill item, but i will say for Sona is an assist item.
Abyssal Scepter is a good choice aswell.

Build Example
Core:
Archangel's Staff,
Mercury's Treads,
Rabadon's Deathcap, [item=Soul Shroud]
Prefer:
Archangel's Staff,
Mercury's Treads,
Rabadon's Deathcap,
Banshee's Veil,
Aegis of the Legion, [item=Soul Shroud]
-
Pros / Cons
Pros:
-High early and mid game damage output
-Higher sustained healing output
-Great lane control
-Can even solo lane when you are against melee's and you are over level 6
Cons:
-Team dependent
-Squishy
-Bad against long range
-Easy target
-
Laning
Stay behind your laning partner most of the time. If your partner is a squishy champ, then put on W(
Aria of Perseverance all the the time, and heal when needed. If your opponent are bad go for Q(
Hymn of Valor, and push them all the time.
If you start feeding(around 3 feeds) play as much def as possible, even hug the tower, and save your ulti for people who jumps you.
But mostly your ulti is for when you see both opponent are standing on a straight line and your partner is ready to kill or jump them. USE IT
-
Good laning partner
So far I have tried to lane with a few different champions.
But the most recommended champion is Katarina. I had around 10 games with her all of them ended up wins. Not just that, she had no deaths during our laning period.
here is some of the stats I got when laning with her:

-
Creep Jungling
Just want to say get blue golem buff as much as possible for your cooldowns
-
Working in the team
Always stay behind your teammates
What I do in a teamfights, is to put on W(
Aria of Perseverance first to put on some defense for my team, then ulti if 2 or more are standing on a straight line or behind each other closely. Then I immediately switch to Q(
Hymn of Valor to give my team extra damage output.
If we are loosing and running back, put on E quickly or spam it if they have enough health. Or else keep switching between W and E
-
Farming
When you lane, TRY to always get last minion hit, to get more gold. And use Q(
Hymn of Valor to do the same when you can manage your mana
-
