Guide is all up to date. Not to many changes but some helpful things! Still Alistar is one of the better tanks in the game even though the lack of a lot of damage. With the latest update it allows you to control lanes and the initiation of a team fight. Be controlling and supportive of your team. Now get mooing!
Alistar is one of the best tanks/supportive champions in the game. If used correctly, you will be able to soar with assist. This is a very loose guide because to play a good Alistar you have to see how the other team matches up. Also, this is my first guide so input is more than welcome! I've come to the conclusion of this guide by putting a few others together and adding my own elements.
Trample MOOOO! I can kill creeps now! Pulverize Mid to late game this in combination with Headbutt is your most useful ability. Headbutt Alistar's skill shot so to say. A well Headbutted enemy Champion will put them straight to your teammate/s for the kill and an assist for you. Triumphant Roar Saves lives! This ability is your best friend early game. Unbreakable Will Can be used in multiple types of situations. Team Fights to stay alive if you are focused late game, to tank turrets alone or without minions, to take a turret down faster, if in danger of dieing while running (only in emergencies), to turret dive an enemy champion to then Headbutt them to a teammate etc. Unbreakable Will is very useful but to not be wasted.
Masteries + Runes
The reason for Masteries like this is to make Alistar much more Tanky so that he can take a lot more damage in Team Fights late game.
3/3 > Resistance
3/3 > Hardiness
3/3 > Strength of Spirit
2/2 > [mastery=Defensive Mastery]
3/3 > [mastery=Harden Skin]
4/4 > [mastery=Veteran's Scars]
2/3 > [mastery=Ardor]
1/1 > [mastery=Tenacity]
1/3 > [mastery=Good Hands]
3/3 > Perseverance
4/4 > [mastery=Awareness]
1/1 > Greed
(Health and Armor runes help out big time early game be able and push and hold lanes with your lane partner.)
x9 Greater Mark of Resilience
x9 Greater Seal of Fortitude
x9 Greater Glyph of Focus
x1 Greater Quintessence of Focus
x2 Greater Quintessence of Resilience
The best summoner abilities to take are always going to be Flash in slot D and Teleport in slot F.
If you aren't high enough level to get Flash then get Ghost. (Will be a little disadvantage, but can still get the job done.)
All other are a complete waste to get. Even Exhaust, because Alistar already has a stun and if used correctly you won't need Exhaust.
Spawn Items: x2 Faerie Charm and one Mana Potion
1500 gold. Upgrade to x2 Philosopher's Stone and Boots of Speed. (You should have saved your Teleport to now use to get back to your lane.)
1600 Gold. Mercury's Treads for Magic Resist and much needed CC reduction.
For AP Heavy opponents start [item=Force of Nature], buy Negatron Cloak
For AD Heavy opponents start Thornmail, buy Chain Vest
(Your Teleport should be back up so you can head out to the lane or to help a teammate in another lane.)
Finish rushing [item_text=Force of Nature] or Thornmail.
Many people mentioned CDR, So I would highly suggest building a Frozen Heart.
Along with the new update Alistar's HP got cut a bit (and the new champion Vayne UGH!), you should build at least one if not two Warmog's Armor.
Other good items based on other team:
Ability Power Heavy:
Aegis of the Legion
Attack Damage Heavy:
My complete build usually looks like this.(Replacing a Warmog's if they have a ton of AP.)
[item=Force of Nature]
That is a really expensive build, that is why it is good to keep those Philosopher's Stones as long as possible.
This skill order works great because it allows you to continually stay up to health and harass the enemy champions. Headbutt is not needed to level because you are not using it for damage just to push enemies to your teammates.
Working in the team
This is very important to your lane partner. You want to attempt and feed them as many last hits as possible since you will be getting your two Philosopher's Stones. Keep your lane partner alive with Triumphant Roar. Pulverize the ground to stun other champions and to get a few last hits here and there. If you are laning with a high burst damage champion you want to work to get that First Blood. Do not be too pushy. The update made Alistar really be able to push lanes, but don't pin them to the turret because you can't XP block or attempt for a kill.
You all know once Mid Game hits the whole lane thing goes out the window and Team Fights start to happen. So in a Team Fight is where Alistar shines and silently dictates the fight. Most people focus on the heavy hitters and the carries in a Team Fight, this gives Alistar the chance to single out an enemy champion for his teammates to devour in just a few moments and then continue taking out others.
With Alistar you want to try and initiate first and not expectantly by using Flash to get in there and pick an enemy out. It is always best to pick out the other teams carry or champions with major burst damage. Picking out enemy tanks can be useful, but tend to be harder to kill.
Using your Pulverize to your advantage in Team Fights to help your teammates and you escape if you lose/losing a Team Fight. When trying to save teammate, it is also beneficial to use your Headbutt to send enemies in the opposite direction.
Thanks for reading this guide. If you have any questions feel free to ask and give input. It is appreciated. I will try and update the build as much as possible.
