Twisted Fate Build

Table of Contents

  • Introduction

Twisted Fate is a unique champion, he has so many unique aspects to him but has a large skill cap when you look past the face value. The most unique thing about this champion is that he can run all three aspects, AD/AP/Hybrid and still put out some good damage. Out of the three build choices for TF I personally love playing the hybrid form.

Warning: Twisted Fate on Twisted Treeline requires a higher Skill Cap

  • Pros and Cons

    AP:
    Great Damage
    Stun/Slow/Mana Regen
    Teleport/Map Vision
    Extra Gold
    Long Range Nuke
    Utility Burst

    Cons:
    Squishy
    High Skill Cap
    Burst Reliant
    Weak Against Incapacitates

    AD:
    Pros:
    Great Damage
    Stun/Slow/Mana Regen
    Teleport/Map Vision
    Extra Gold
    Consistent Burst
    Tanky W/Lifesteal

    Cons:
    Squishy
    High Skill Cap
    Weak Against Incapacitates
    No Heavy Burst w/o Crit

    Hybrid:
    Pros:
    Great Damage
    Hybrid Damage
    Stun/Slow/Mana Regen
    Teleport/Map Vision
    Extra Gold
    Consistent Burst

    Cons:
    Squishy
    High Skill Cap
    Weak Against Incapacitates
    No Heavy Burst

  • Abilities

    [spell=Second Sight]
Money Money Money... MONEY! This passive is insane, it allows for a large gold increase for the entire team, 5 minion kills equals 10 gold, pretty nice. On average the average player gets 50-100 minion kills. So thats 100-200 gold, pretty nice overall especially since the entire team gets it.

    Wild Cards
This skill as AP is powerful especially early, and if you can keep the AP train going it can wreck a team if you can get all 3 cards to hit properly. As AD and Hybrid you avoid this skill early, as it doesn't do real damage.

    Pick A Card
mmmm bread and butter of twisted fate... So heres the breakdown:
Blue card does decent damage and restores a boatload of mana.
Red card does the most damage especially as a hybrid and it slows down the enemies.
Gold card does the same amount as the blue card but stuns! Stuns rock the gold card has saved me time and time again.

As AP the cards do the same damage, the red one does barely more but not even worth not using the gold card.

As hybrid/AD the red card is a giant nuke!

    Stacked Deck
This is amazing, 15% cooldown and 15% attack speed. The cooldown reduction on top of the utility tree is nice. The extra burst after the fourth attack is reliant in the hybrid.

    Destiny
This help produce snap ganks and with some good use of Gold Cards you can teleport in and save someone. It also allows you to detect dragon grabbers and what not. Also you can defend and assault turrets with this ability.

  • Masteries

Three builds AP/AD/Hybrid and I use the same mastery build for all three. the build I use is 11/0/19 mainly picking up [mastery=Archaic Knowledge] and 2 in Sunder for some good Armor Pen. Out of the Utility tree the basics are picked up improved move speed, mana regen, and cooldown reduction.

  • Runes

    AP Build:
Greater Quintessence of Fortitude x 3
Greater Mark of Insight x 9
Greater Seal of Vitality x 9
Greater Glyph of Insight x 9

    Total roundup:
    78 Health
    175 Health at level 18 - 253 Health Total
    Magic Penetration: 14

This give you some great early damage, and plenty of health for toe to toe battles.

    AD/Hybrid Build:
Greater Quintessence of Fortitude x 3
Greater Mark of Desolation x 9
Greater Seal of Alacrity x 9
Greater Glyph of Alacrity x 9

    Total roundup:
    78 Health
    15 Armor Pen
    12.6% Attack Speed

This works off of his passive, attack speed helps him very early in the game doing some real damage with that fourth strike of doom. The health provides some toe to toe strength. The armor of pen of course helps cut through the enemy.

  • Summoner Spells

When it comes to summoner spells I always choose and

The other spells are not useful on Twisted Treeline you need these summoner spells to keep good positioning and to avoid ganks. You can argue what you like but the defensive and offensive strength of ghost and flash is off the charts.

  • Item Build

    AP:

Start with boots and health potions.

Follow up with a Dagger and build a [item=Malady] this item will allow for some serious damage early reducing the enemy's magic resistance to negative or low enough for your magic penetration to drop the enemy to 0.

My final build generally looks like this:
    [item_icon=Malady]

The last item is generally a large health pool item, or magic resist depending on the enemy team.

    AD:

I usually start with a and roll into boots next.

The first item to build is the Sword of the Divine

    Final build usually like this:

    [item_icon=Sword of the Devine][item_icon=Stark's Fervor]

    The fifth item being defensive.

    Hybrid:

I usually start with a and roll into boots next.

The first item to build is the [item=Sword of the Devine]

    Final build usually like this:

    [item_icon=Malady][item_icon=Stark's Fervor]

With this build I stray from defensive items if I can, because the damage through put is amazing, if you collect all of these items and the game is still going and you dont need defense swap wit's end with a Guinsoo's Rageblade or a Hextech Gundblade.

I'll explain why all of my builds are overly offensive later.

  • Gameplay

    Now to the good stuff..

    Level 1 and the Lane
This is one of my favorite stages as Twisted Fate the damage output of all three builds is fairly powerful at this level. If your with an ally save your gold cards for harassments but combine it with stack deck or wild cards. This combo will cause serious damage to your opponents, try and sneak away with a few champion kills or several last hits.

Level 6 and the Mid Game
This stage of the game can be different based on how well you did early..

If you got beat up on or didn't acquire a lot of gold you need to play defensively and last hit. You have your ultimate now so keep any eye out for good times for ganks, ganking can get you or your teammate some much needed gold. The goal here is to farm and defend, also take dragon if you can, if you can't play back even more.

If you rolled face in the first phase continue to do so, buy wards and Last hit, jungle when you can. If your not sure when to jungle if more than one is missing you probably shouldn't jungle top, or their side. Keep your eyes open for snap ganks using your ultimate, also if you can find one of them alone bust their face but stay back allowing you to chase or run with ease.

    The Late Game
If your here... its time to end the game, grab dragon as much as possible and when you get the next ACE push the towers and try and finish it, at the very least get the Nexus turret, you can back door if needed. Twisted Fate is not a champion that does well after the 25-30 minute time. If you need to swap one of your damage items for a banshee's veil or a thornmail based on their primary damage. Also dont get caught alone...

    Tips and Tricks/Positioning
Combine Gold card with stacked deck to make for a hard hitting nuke.

Use wild card right before team fights to break banshee veil shields.
Wild card fires one from the middle and one 45° on the left and 45° on the right.

Pick a Card red does the most damage as hybrid as it adds AP and AD.

Destiny can be used for an across the map teleport or spotting all of the enemies at once.
Also when ganking or setting up a gank using Destiny teleport into bushes its harder to see it coming, if you do it in the wide open people can see it coming.

When it comes to positioning you need to hang back, dont be a pincer in a squeeze, and try to avoid initiating a team fight. Stay at a range at all times, flash early and head back if you need to.. Keep your damage up and keep your distance.. that was the hardest thing to achieve when I played Twisted Fate.

  • Summary

In my testing and building of this guide I discovered Twisted Fate on the Twisted Treeline is a tad fragile, but does a great amount of damage and brings a bag full of utility with him. The only downside to Twisted Fate is that he requires a high skill cap to make him work. There were games where I got barreled through the one I remember off hand was Renekton, Mundo, and Nunu...

However don't let that discourage you though I love playing Twisted Fate and will try and rotate him in more often now.
