  • Introduction

Greetings fellow LoL-players, and welcome to my second attempt at a guide (scrapped the first one). I am Zomboid from the EU client.

First, I have to mention that while my W/L ratio might not be perfect and I make some misstakes here and there but I still consider myself as a good Amumu player with positivite comments from my team and random players and often good K/D/A ratio, 3/0/15 6/0/16 6/0/21 just for examples, I with close to 600 games played have a pretty good grasp of the mechanics.

With this guide I hope that some more people will see the wonders of Amumu... AP/Tank style!

So without further delay, let's get to the guide itself.

  • Abilities

    Cursed Touch
Really nice passive if you happen to have lots of casters in your team (also helps you). Only downside is that you have to melee attack them so not as good in teamfights.

    Bandage Toss
Long range stun/chasing/semi-nuke ability. It's a skillshot, so it requires some practice to get the hang of.

    Despair
Very nice AoE-ability. 3,5%(@Lv.5) per second is a lot and specially together with all your other AoE-abilities.

    Tantrum
While the damage reduction is only barely noticable, it's awesome for early game laning. Use it to last hit and harras other melee champions. Spammable if focused, which helps for that extra damage in teamfights.

    Curse of the Sad Mummy
Really awesome Ulti. Used mainly after initiating a teamfight to wreck havoc in their team while your team gets some free hits.Decent to good damage. Works wonders if you have a lot of AoE-champions (Annie+Ryze+Amumu = Overkill).

  • Pros / Cons

Okay, so why would you want to play Amumu? Here's my validation on the little guy:

    Pros
    -One of the best initiators
    -Good AoE damage
    -Natural tank
-Fun to play with good teammates (they will love you)
    -Pretty good farmer
    -Easy to jungle with

    Cons
    -Very team dependant
-Needs the Golem buff all the time to stay effective
-Might be hard to get the hang of

  • Masteries + Runes

For masteries, you want to go as much in Defence as you can. Personally, I go with:
    http://leaguecraft.com/masteries/0000000000000003031421341301003100000000000

For runes, I go with lots of Health and Mana

    9x Greater Mark of Fortitude
    9x Greater Seal of Vitality
    9x Greater Glyph of Intellect
    3x Greater Quintessence of Fortitude

    Which in total give you:
    +128 Health
    +175 Health@18
    +101 Mana

Now, I haven't tried Mana Regen instead of flat Mana but flat Mana works very well. Feel free to try Mana Regen if you think that's better.

  • Summoner Abilities

If you've seen the masteries, you've probably guessed that I go with:
    Ghost
    Cleanse

    Why?
Ghost is awesome for chasing and a Ghost+Cleanse combo can get you out of most ganks and bad situations.

But then again, Summoner Abilities is a little of a personal preference.

  • Skilling Order

I really like maxing Tantrum first for improved farming. Some people like to max Despair before Bandage Toss, but I disagree. Maxing Bandage Toss will able you to throw it faster and gives you some nice burst damage (due to the 1:1 AP Ratio).

  • Items

Okay, so here's how I do it:

Start of the game with Doran's Shield and one Health Potion. This will start you off with a whooping 869 Health and some extra health regen. Due to this high health, you can be pretty aggressive in the start.

Stay in lane until you've got at least 1000 gold. This is for buying Boots of Swiftness. Getting it fast will ensure you that you are the fastest one in lane pretty much through your entire laning phase.

Usually, you'll be able to get an Amplifying Tome together with the boots which you will need for [item=Rylai's Scepter] later. Otherwise you can just buy some wards to prevent ganks.

After that, start rushing a [item=Rylai's Scepter]. This item is highly overlooked I think, since I haven't seen any other Amumu with it. This gives you a lot of Health and Ability Power. But mostly, you want it for the passive. Why? Because it procs on Despair. That's right, that means perma slow for enemy champions nearby (as long as you keep it up).

Next you have to take in consideration of the enemy team-setup. The good thing about this build is that it works no matter how their team setup is. The only thing changing is the order in which you get the items.

    Physical heavy team
Get Sunfire Capex2, the classic Amumu item. This gives some good armor and health which is needed if you find there's a lot of guys or gals that like to hit hard and also some extra AoE damage which stacks nicely with Despair.

    Caster heavy
If I find myself doing good, I like to get Abyssal Scepter first if there's a lot of casters in the team. This will increase your damage by a respectable amount while also reducing their magic resist even further which will make your team's casters love you even more. Also gives some well needed Magic Resist.
Next, you want a Banshee's Veil. No explanation needed here I guess, it's just such and awesome item and the only item in this build that will give you Mana.

With these items, you'll be set against whatever they send against you while still being able to dish out a good amount of damage.

  • Build Example

This is how your build should look after a really long game (I've gotten the full build two or three times):

    Boots of Swiftness
    [item=Rylai's Scepter]
    Sunfire Cape
    Sunfire Cape
    Abyssal Scepter
    Banshee's Veil

  • Farming

Thankfully, Amumu is a pretty good farmer for being a tank. Hit the creeps some and then lasthit with Tantrum. Hopefully you'll be able to catch some of the enemy champions in the Tantrum too for some harrassing. It becomes even easier after you get some AP or Sunfire Capes. Then you can just rake in the creep kills and gold.

  • Creep Jungling

The only thing you really need here is the Golem. This is a major part in this build and should not be overlooked. At Lv.6 your ulti have a painfull 170 seconds cooldown and your spells are starting to become hard to maintain without some manaregen. Good thing Amumu is such a good jungler, so getting it is no problem. As soon as you get Lv.6 you can kill it without any problems. It might take some time at first, but as soon as you get Amplifying Tome you'll be able to get it down pretty fast. Just remember to activate Despair and spam Tantrum as much as you can.

Also, while moving between lanes, feel free to stop by the other creeps in the jungle for some fast gold and experience.

  • Working in the team

This is the most important part of the game. Without a good teamwork you will do bad. And since Amumu is so dependant on teamwork, you might want to read with extra care.

Your job is mainly to initiate the teamfights. Stick just slightly ahead of your team, taking the minor harrassment going on, and wait for the moment to jump in. Since you have the control of when to go in, you have to make sure your team is ready when you go. Also make sure you have your ulti up or else you can only scare them away or maybe get a single kill, but it's mostly worth it to wait until you have it.

    Here's how you do it:

    1. Activate Despair. You want this up when you use your ulti for the extra damage.
    2. Cast Bandage Toss on the closest enemy champion. This will stun the target and pulling you in enabling you to get in position while still doing some damage.
3.Position yourself and cast Curse of the Sad Mummy. Positioning is key in that stage. You want to catch as many as you can with the ulti. Be wary of people with Cleanse or Flash since they can get out of it (Flash will get them out but the still get the snare).
    4. Start spamming Tantrum and hitting people. You want to hit someone to decrease the Magic Resist and keep Tantrum up for easy AoE damage. By now your team is hopefully engaged in the battle with you, starting to unleash their skills while they are stuck.
    5. If everything goes as planned, you probably have at least one champion down and the rest are low on health. Now it's time to catch anyone trying to flee with Bandage Toss and the slow from Rylai's Scepter.
    6. Teamfight won and you can push their towers.

Note that teamfights can go bad, so don't be afraid to pull back if you sense things are getting bad.

  • Summary

Hopefully, this guide will help improve your game with Amumu and show you a new side beside the Pure Tank way. And you'll see that if you give this champion some love, you'll see that he'll give some love back and give you lots of fun games and wins.

  • Final words

If you have any thoughts or constructive criticism, please comment.

Finally, I would like to thank my friends. You make the game so much more fun to play and together we'll keep on winning and improving!
