Irelia - Why not play a FUN tank?

  • Introduction

Welcome to my Irelia guide. Irelia is a very entertaining champion, though she definitely has a high skill cap at the time of this patch. It is currently very hard to build an assassin Irelia because of how easy she is to shut down with CC, even with her passive. That's why we'll take the alternative approach. Why not build Irelia as a tank... more than that, a DPS tank?

I'll repeat. Irelia is a very entertaining champion. With most players currently building her as an assassin, take advantage of the general views of her being a squishy DPS. You can be a tank and have dumb players focus you still when you're a beefy tank. If they don't? Your true damage is still enough to make you able to carry.

Are you up to the challenge? Read on, Summoner.

This guide was last updated for Patch v1.0.0.106.

  • Abilities

    Ionian Fervor
Irelia's passive is perfect for her. Essentially, it will be a mercury treads for you if you do not have mercury treads. If you do have mercury treads, it'll help you a bit more. Irelia is shut down pretty easily by CC so any thing that helps offset it will prove very useful.

    Bladesurge
My favorite spell on Irelia. It's very underrated. Most guides will tell you to max out E before Q. Well, I'll take the low road my friends. Q allows for excellent farming and harassing and the damage on it helps immensely. Find more tips on farming with Bladesurge later in the guide.

    Hiten Style
This is Irelia's Bread & Butter. In fact, without this skill right here she is a pretty useless champion. Hiten Style gives Irelia a 'Xin-Xhao' style passive at all times. Whenever she goes to attack units, she'll get some HP back.

Though, what makes this skill so powerful is when you activate it. You gain TRUE DAMAGE. True damage is a specified amount of damage that cannot be offset by any type of armor or magic resistance. Yeah. It's awesome.

    Equilibrium Strike
Early game you may run into some people that have more health than you so it'll be a stun, but for the most part this skill will be a very light nuke slow that will help you catch up to your targets for a gank.

    Transcendent Blades
This is probably the most useless skill on Irelia. However, if you learn how to use it correctly you can continue laning for practically an eternity. Transcendent Blades scales with Hiten Style's HP Regen per hit. Whenever you see a lot of enemies or creeps lined up, let 'er go. You'll be at full health in no time.

  • Skilling Order

Level 1: E/Q You may want to invest in E first if your team is attempting a gank or a team fight at level 1
    Level 2: W
    Level 3: Q/E
    Level 4: W
    Level 5: W
    Level 6: R

From this point on, you should try to max out W and Q as soon as possible. Though, remember to get your ultimate at 11 and 16.

  • Masteries + Runes

    My mastery page: http://leaguecraft.com/masteries/0000000000000001030401000000030140032031301

Note: This mastery page only really works if you go with my spell combination of Ghost and Flash. If you're not using Ghost and Flash, obviously do not pick up the Improve Ghost and Improved Flash talents.

    Runes:

Runes will always be different and really based on the preference of the player. This is my current setup with her, you can use it or pick from it. Hey, you can even laugh at it if you want.

    Marks

x9 - 15% Attack Speed will do Irelia a lot of good for early game. Irelia is a champion that is based around her attack speed. The more you hit people, the more benefit you get out of her Hiten Style's Active.

    Seals

x9 - The Dodge will really help you down those Melee-heavy teams. FOR MELEE HEAVY TEAMS

x9 - The Mana Regen will assist you throughout the entire game. Kinda self-explanatory. FOR CASTER HEAVY TEAMS

    Glyphs

x9 - The Mana Regen will assist you throughout the entire game. Kinda self-explanatory. FOR MELEE HEAVY TEAMS

x9 - The Magic resist is just what you'll need to counter those pesky casters. FOR CASTER HEAVY TEAMS

    Quints

x3 - The extra Attack Damage will prove to be crucial to early game last-hitting and ganks.

x3 - If you're going to be a tank, why not show everybody early?

  • Summoner Abilities

For Irelia there are a few different combinations. Though, currently my favorite setup is...

Flash allows Irelia to initiate offensively with a Bladesurge Equilibrium Strike. Ghost allows you to catch up to targets or escape.

    Other Choices:

    - Strong choice for a Solo Lane Irelia
    - Against very Melee Heavy Teams
    - If CC is shutting you down so badly, it's always a good alternative.
    - Shut down enemy healers or for a little more bursty DPS.
    - For a Jungle Irelia. Though, that's not what this guide is about and I won't have any tips for you.

    Bad Choices:

    - Heal is a crutch. With as much HP Regen you can get simply by auto attacking as Irelia, it's not necessary on this champion.
    - You should never be so frequently oom that you need this spell.
[spell_icon=Fortify] - Leave it for the tanks
[spell_icon=Rally] - Not viable in the current meta game
    - Map Awareness is awesome. It really is. But, stick to wards. You shouldn't hurt yourself by taking this.
    - Sorry. You shouldn't be using this spell.

When you're playing as 'tank Irelia' you should always be building to counter the enemy team.

I've created a few builds that will help you do just that below.

  • Build Example - Anti Melee

    Anti-Melee

Start out the game with a .

Next, work towards your if they're not as heavy with CC. If they still are, it may be a good idea to invest into instead.

Once you've finished your boots, it's time to move onto your first real item. Since you're going to be building to counter Melee, build a . It's pretty inexpensive for what it will do for you for the entire game. If you're not a fan of Thornmail yet, move ontowards a

Next up, start working on your . This item is essential to any of the Irelia builds I will give you. The order that I like to purchase the items in is...: -> -> -> .

Once you've finished the Trinity Force, you're probably starting to realize that the little caster on their team is actually starting to hurt you. Or, perhaps their CC is finally getting the best of you. never fear! Add some magic resistance and one blocked spell with . If you're not running into this problem, feel free to pick up that Thornmail you never did earlier or look into a or even a .

From this point onward, the game should be ending. If it isn't continue to build your tanky ways. Get Magic Resist through items like [item_icon=Force of Nature] if you need it. If you don't, purchase more attack Speed and Anti-Melee items like

  • Build Example - Anti Caster

    Anti-Caster

Start out the game with a .

    Next, work towards your .

Once you've finished your boots, it's time to move onto your first real item. Since you're going to be building to counter Casters, build a . It's a pretty convenient item for laning (Catalyst) and will counter any caster because no item has an effect as OP as Banshee's Veil.

Next up, start working on your . This item is essential to any of the Irelia builds I will give you. The order that I like to purchase the items in is...: -> -> -> .

Once you've finished the Trinity Force, you're probably starting to realize that the little melee on their team is actually starting to hurt you. If that's the case, it's time to invest into a . If they're not bothering you yet, carry on! If you want to have a bit more DPS and abuse the 'bubble' system, purchase a . If you'd rather move faster and get loads more magic resistance, build a [item_icon=Force of Nature].

From this point onward, the game should be ending. If it isn't continue to build your tanky ways. Get Magic Resist/Armor through items like if you need it. If you don't, purchase more attack Speed/ DPS items like .

  • Farming

Farming as Irelia is very simple and entertaining.

Bladesurge refunds some of it's mana if it lands a killing blow on something AND resets it's cooldown. If you're laning in early game, it may not always be mana viable to completely farm down lanes with your Bladesurge. But, whenever you need to quickly clear a lane it is very simple to jump from minion to minion with the reset cooldown and mana return of Bladesurge.

Irelia's Ultimate is another viable way of taking down an entire creep wave.

  • Pros / Cons

    Pros:

+ Is not very easy to counter with items.
+ Brings Chaotic unsuspecting damage into team fights.
+ One of the best 1v1 champions in the game.
    + Easy Farmer
+ One of the most consistent laners, doesn't have to return to base often.

    Cons:

    - Shutdown easily by coordinated CC.
    - If the Enemy team isn't constantly focusing you, you may have wanted to build one DPS item instead of a Tank item.
    - Relatively new champion so expect grief if you play as her.
